I love Hungry Girl but...

Let me first of all just say that I LOVE the hungry girl website and email list. However, I was a bit disappointed by the book.

First of all, it's missing some of the best recipes that I have seen on the hungry girl mailing list (enchiladas, anyone?! mmm!) There have been several times that I thought about making a hungry girl recipe, looked it up in the book, and realized that it's not in there! I realize that they couldn't fit every recipe in the book but it's still a little disappointing.

I also wish that there was a picture of most of the recipes in the book. They are available online, but it's pretty inconvenient to look up pictures of things. It'd be nice to be able to flip through and look for something yummy to make. I would have gladly paid more money for a book with pictures of each recipe.

As for the recipes themselves? They're hit or miss. I'm not a fan of the faux-fried Fiber One recipes, and I wish the author would have recommended more seasonings for a lot of the faux-fried recipes. They taste nothing like fried food but they could be decent with proper seasoning! There are definitely several gems within this book, but there are also some very bland recipes.

I also wish that the author had included more dinner foods. The book has a good mix of desserts, appetizers, drinks, sandwiches, etc., but I think many people would agree that dinner recipes are the most sought out.

For the price, it's not a bad little cookbook. However, I'd recommend subscribing to the email list more than I'd recommend getting the book.

this simplifies my life

I've been a fan of the Hungry Girl website for a year or so. I would check in to see what was up, & print out recipes. This book is worth the price, just because I no longer need to shuffle through a bunch of printouts anymore. It saves paper.

The crab stuffed mushrooms are a staple for my Oscar parties. Even SoopahBowl parties. No one is the wiser that the delish appetizer is low-fat.

NOTE: The "hollandaise" for Eggs Bene-Chick fooled my husband, a BIG fan of Eggs Benedict. I will never make real hollandaise again.

LOWER CAL VERSIONS

This book is focused on providing recipes that are lower in fat and calories so you can eat your favorite foods without feeling quite as guilty. In the author's own words "This book is filled with simple, fun, easy recipes that use lots of packaged foods and shortcuts to make great-tasting guilt-free snacks and meals." The theme of the book is to "feed your every craving without piling on the calories". It is not a book that emphasizes nutrition or healthy eating. As most people realize packaged foods are inherently unhealthy. If this book leads someone down the path of achieving weight loss then it is beneficial.

Index

The book has recipes for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, appetizers, party foods, desserts, baked goods, junk foods, and cocktails. It provides low-calorie versions of frozen margaritas, fudge, ice cream freezes, burgers, French fries, pizzas, onion rings, burritos, chocolate cake, brownies, cheese nachos, and other "guilt-free" junk foods. The book also provides cooking tips and shopping lists. Hungry Girl would be of interest to someone not primarily interested in significant changes in food choices, but rather looking for some recipes that are lower-calorie versions of standard American favorite dishes. This book can be used to help someone begin losing weight with the hope they will eventually transition to a diet of healthier foods. A great companion book would be THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams.
