Devil in the details

So, how long would it take to walk 22 miles home from school, which Arnold supposedly does on occasion? The BBC reported in 2004 that a man beat a horse in a 22 mile race taking two hours, five minutes and 19 seconds to complete the 22 mile course, beating the fastest horse by two minutes and 17 seconds. And he wasn't walking. I'm sure Arnold's parents didn't wait up.

not just for kids

Really, I am age 51, and I enjoyed Sherman Alexie's young adult novel greatly. Alexie, I believe, said at one point that he is not sure that it is a young adult novel, but that was silly talk. Of course it's a young adult novel, even if it contains some adult sensibilities, and a very good one that deserved to win the National Book Award (which it did). It is among other things a funny look at growing up, and a haunting portrait of the ugly side of the legacy of the conquest of the USA by the white race. But despite the dark stuff, it is a big hearted and positive look at life. Who could resist it?

Absolutly true diary of a part time Indian

Endearing and amusing, those are the first two words that come to mind for me. The term "Part Time Indian" conjures up current and historical myth regarding Native American identity. It is a social commentary on perspectives. Alexie tells the story of a Native Teenager's identity crisis and how he works through it living in two worlds, Native and Ethnic America. The author brilliantly protrays the acceptance and the biases found in both societies. There are modest sexual references that the more Puritanical readers might want to consider before purchasing, but I think the average person would not be offened in the least. I recomend this for teens and adults.

Excellent read

I had no idea what to expect. @ first I was wondering if I made a mistake, but once I got reading, it was an up and down ride of laughter and sadness... Anybody who starts playing the "poor pitiful me" game with themselves and/or others MUST read this book.....

This book is not for kids under 13 or 14

I thought this was a kid's book and bought it for a 10 year old's birthday, but he is not getting it (yet). It is NOT for kids as some subject matter is not appropriate--masturbation, looking at girls' breasts, for example, are mentioned briefly but may be upsetting to some parents. For us old folks (I am 61) this was a good read. A little simple, but dead on about life, what we did to the American Indians, teen life, life between parent and child, child and best friend, the importance of education, the importance of being weird and the importance of fitting in, etc. I've never read the author's work before so the technique of writing as a 14 year old and interspersing cartoon sketches was new to me. If you are too young, you won't get a lot of the references, so better to be older.
