The Greatest Filly Who Ever Drew Breath

Man O' War's groom used to love to say that about him..."this here is the greatest horse who ever drew breath." Well, if you know of Ruffian, that's the ONLY way she can be described! This elegant filly was a shear joy to watch. Her tragic end was taken hard by everyone. Even now, some 25 years since I witnessed that tragic match race, tears fall as I write. In reading "Burning from the Start" I was treated to aspects about the behind the scenes life of Ruffian's birth and her training, jockies, trainer and exercise riders and it was all written in a way that would interest both racing and non-racing fans. Jane treated Ruffian's demise with the utmost respect. Her depiction of Ruffian's final moments, when she was finally set "free" were nothing short of genius. I love this book. I'm ordering it because it is a keeper!

A compelling and heartbreaking book

This is a brilliant book - a must-read if you love horses, but definitely worth reading even if you have no connection to horses or racing. Very well researched, full of illuminating facts, but it reads like fiction. Very moving!

One of the best racing books

This is one book that is impossible to put down. Although the reader knows how the story will end, it is still a powerful and tragic story. A reader would have to be made of stone to not cry after reading this book.

An experience of exhiliration, reflection and tragedy.

Difficult to read as the book unfolds because the ending is known but the personification of Ruffian holds one to the text. The author creates an historical flow and does not bog down in intricacies. A complex tapestry of the fraility of human personality and decision-making, causes the reader to ponder the "if" question.

The book appears to be very honest in its approach to the people involved, the surly part of horse racing and tragedy itself. Ruffian's last night will be poignantly imaged in the reader's memory. The injury, subsequent failed surgery and eventual death are graphic but tastefully portrayed. A difficult belnd for any author.

Top notch - just wish I could find a hard back copy.
