Essential for anyone with two or more children

I count myself blessed that my two kids get along swimmingly for about 90% of the time, but my husband and I bought this book when our second child arrived, wanting to be prepared for the worst. Think of the book as a tool kit. Faber and Mazlish equip parents with the most effective tools around to help cope with and diffuse sibling rivalry and the havoc it can wreak on a family. The techniques described herein are useful, pragmatic, and based upon long experience. I can't recommend the book too highly.

Informed parents raise better siblings

I bought this book because my toddler (2) was being very aggressive toward my newborn. While, I think the theories in this book require at least one child to be emotionally and verbally developed enough to express their emotions and thoughts, it has helped me look at her aggression in a new light. And treat her in a more positive manner even when I don't like her behavior. There are also some very valuable lessons to foster good relations between siblings - that's the best lesson I learned. My children may have personality differences that keep them from being best friends but there are things that I can and MUST to to foster an respectful and caring relationship. EVERYONE with more than one child needs to read this book.

The basics on raising more than one

This is a very simple book that gives good tips on what to do to stop your kids from fighting so much. It's weakness is that it assumes kids fight over the same simple things, such as sharing toys. You can use the ideas and modify them to suit other situations. I'd also suggest How to Talk and a book titled Perfect Parenting to expand the situations and apply the concepts to all different aspects of raising your children.

This book is well written and presented in a manner that provides simple, common sense approaches to the anarchy in your home. Many of the scenarios described in the "sessions" could be happening in your very own homes, and instead of pulling your hair out in frustration you could be making an effort to learn alternate means of conflict resolution. I read this book and saw myself or my mother (mostly my mother, of course! :)) in most of the situations where an action or phrase would only serve to exacerbate conflict. Especially useful for those parents who are afraid of showing favoritism or trying "too hard" not to.

This is a great book

I have three children - the oldest are girls ages 8 and 6 and boy age 3. This book was wonderful. My two girls constantly battle and my boy is extrememly agressive towards everyone in the family. This book helped me learn not only how to work through these problems, but how to avoid them altogether.
