We see what we preconceive

This is a reflective and poetic telling of a rather complicated story. There were many unexplained and incompletely developed people and ideas, but in a sense, that is the reality of life. Bits and pieces of our individual and collective past and present coming together to shape our future. There is never the final clarity and explanation that we would ideally like to have and people are rarely linear in their choices. The whole jail drama did become tedious and its purpose served with less verbiage. All in all, it was time well spent.

The Injustice of it All

Well written, true to life characters, mixed up with our so called justice system. The tangled web of abduction by a parent trying to protect his child and willing to sacrifice his wellbeing for a life on the run. A sad but accurate plunge into the workings of the criminal system in America. Hard not to feel for each of these characters with their strengths and weaknesses, trying to do what they think is best for those they love.

Continues, even after the last page...

Delia Hopkins, a search and resuce team of two (with her trusting dog) by day, mother and best friend to all, by night. Delia Hopkins is in her early 30s and raised by her single father after her mothers death when she was 4. Delia is strong and lovable, and... about to fall apart.

Delia now questions every relationship in her life, the connection and loyalty with her father Andrew, with her childhood friend and boyfriend, Eric, and with her childhood and always trusted best friend Fitz. When the 'skeletons in the closets' come forth in this extended family, everybody is wounded, but especially Delia. Now, the novel spins out as they try to find thier way through the past.

This novel is written in each of the voices of the characters. Each character building the story with their recollections of the past, the present and their hopes for the future. Together each character has to face each other and admit to their [human] faults.

This is the first of Ms. Picoults novels that I have read, and if they are all like this, then they are worth reading. The writing style flowed well, the concept of the story and the interactions were wonderful, never a moment of distraction, however... I found myself unable to start a new book after this one. The characters stayed around for a while; especially Delia and her father Andrew. Very much an enjoyable book!

Home Run for Picoult

Once again, Jodi Picoult weaves a humanistic tale that engrosses the reader and touches the heart. Her personification makes the characters jump off of the page and crawl into your life. I found myself wondering about them long after the book was over. Recommended for first time Picoult readers and long time fans.

Vanishing Acts Review

I was impressed. Picoult knows how to capture a scene. I like the writing style, told in the voice of various characters. This book left me thinking about the character of the father for a long time. What are we willing to do, just to get what we want? Is there anything we won't do, when we reach our breaking point?
