What a thought provoking experience!
Nineteen
Minutes
Wow...There is only one true way to describe this book, EXCEPTIONAL! Jodi Picoult's writing style and technique are unmatched and unbeatable! What I love about Jodi's books is that she isn't afraid to tackle subjects that are real. She doesn't just tell a story from one side, she tells a story from ALL sides. This makes her books thought provoking, emotionally stirring and it makes it impossible for the reader to read her books without doing some serious soul searching.
In "Nineteen Minutes", the subject is frightening and horror filled. This book points out that, not only does it take a community to raise a child, it takes a community to raise a "monster". Who is truly to blame when a child, who has been pushed to the wall by bullies from the moment he steps on the school bus that first day of kindergarten and NO ONE steps up to defend him, finally reaches the point of breaking or striking back? When the parents turn a blind eye and say "You just have to turn the other cheek" and the school says "If you hit back, you get in trouble", what are we truly teaching our children?
When the bullies get away with the bullying because they're on the school team that is going to the championships, and Heaven forbid if they aren't allowed to play, what does this teach them? It teaches them that they are untouchable. It teaches them that it's okay to pick on and bully the child who is "different". It teaches them HATE!
Jodi Picoult points out in this book that when the community, the parents and the school turn a blind eye to the bullying, EVERYONE loses. Because you can only push a person so far. And when that person is up against the wall and finally reached the point of no return, they either break, or they strike out at everyone who has ever hurt them before. So, who is truly to blame here? I think that finger can be pointed at everyone.

A realistic look at an increasing crisis.
Jodi Picoult has attacked a very painful and difficult subject, school shootings/bullying, in a very, non-hysterical, "everyday people" way. It is eye opening, un-sentimental and "can't-put-it-down" riviting.

Good but not Picoult's Best
I have read a few of Jodi's books and was really impressed. I read
Nineteen
Minutes looking
for a surprise ending...it wasn't a large surprise to me. I knew how it was going to end. But on a good note Jodi really uses alot of strong words to enforce everything happening. I love how she used flashbacks and doesn't just stay as one persons view, it changes. And well heres my summary:
Josie Cormier and many others walked into the doors of Sterling High on March 6th like it was any other day but that wasn't how the day ended up. Peter Houghton never fit in, since the first day of school he was teased and bullied and he had had enough. Detective Patrick D. always felt as if he never got any where in time to do anything. Alex Cormier is a succesful judge trying to singley raise Josie. Lacy, well she is trying to survive since Joey's death and make Peter stronger. On March 6th all there lives change as a high school shooting occurs at Sterling High School, in nineteen minutes a person can do many things, one being killing ten people.

great
This audio book was read very well, The writer and story were simply great, very thought provoking and timely.
How Bullying Affects Others' Lives
It is difficult to read in the beginning because of the recent VA Tech shootings. However, stick with it to get the perspective of the shooter. What pushes people to commit such acts. A must read for this day and time. People need to be educated on the seriousness of bullying and its affects on people. There is a very dramatic ending!
