One of the most emotionally inspiring stories ever!

Though this book and The Lost Boy are not happy stories in the traditional sense, they are extremely inspirational. We have come a long way since the 60's and 70's in the area of child abuse. I'd suggest visiting Dave's website, if not before reading his first 2 books, then certainly afterwards. Some of the questions which are left unanswered in the books are answered there. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has contact with children in any way at all, as well as anyone who feels as though they have had a difficult life and that life isn't fair.

I read both books in the past 12 hours. I was so moved.

In my naive world, I was sickened to hear how a mother that gave birth to a new life - her own flesh - could be so cruel. Dave, I have thought of you all day with tears and with great pride. Somehow by the grace of God, you survived. You are forever a sense of strength and power, faith and love. I stand up and admire you for believing in you. You are incredible. When is "A Man Named Dave" being published? I am ready to grow with you some more.

Extremely saddening

This book, which I read in about 2 hours, was so incredibly sad, I couldnt stop myself from crying. The saddest aspect to me was the fact that every system in this child's life had betrayed him for so long. This child lived like this for about 8 years. He was starved, beaten, tortured, ridiculed, etc and his dad didn't do a thing to help him. Nor did the teachers, or any other authority figure in his life. He endured this for most of his young life until finally SOMEONE had the brains to actually help him. It infuriates me that systems fail these children. The ending is happy, but the signs were there all along and no one acted until he was 12. Makes one think about our obligations, not only as citizens, but as human beings. I cant fathom how his faith is so strong today, I would be so angry at the world if it were me. But then I guess that is what made him a survivor! God Bless David Pelzer.

An incredible, inspiring story of resiliency!

This book, as well as the sequel, "The Lost Boy" are incredibly written and touching stories. They are both by far two of the best books I have ever read. They touched my heart, made me cry, and made me want to be there for him myself. I am a Grad student on my way to becoming a counselor and it's always been my innate desire to help those in need, but these books put the real traumas out there for all to see. I would recommend these 2 books to anyone, especially counselors, teachers, and parents. Thanks for sharing your story, Dave. I admire your courage and cannot wait to read your third book.

One of the most emotionally gripping books I have ever read.

I am a middle school teacher and have personally encountered instances of child abuse, but never anything even remotely like what Dave Pelzer went through. I read "A Child Called It" in one sitting--I literally could not put it down. Over half the 30 teachers I work with have read the book and they all agree with me that it is a book every teacher should read. I met Dave this last week--he gave a talk at a university near here and that was a very emotional and rewarding experience. Most people who have gone through what he did would have given up and perished--Dave has not only survived but has thrived. He is an extremely effective speaker. If you only read one book this year--this is the one.
