Another contemporary classic - Palahniuk crafts a perfect look at the tragedy of modern living
"
Survivor
" is a masterful look at contemporary culture. Much like "Fight Club," "Survivor" shows the degeneration of our society. This story is the autobiography of Tender Branson, the supposed last remaining member of a cultish religion who becomes a media icon and an idol in contemporary America. The entire story follows the pattern of much of cable television these days. Disappointingly enough, Tender Branson is everything that pop-culture wants us to be. He is the perfect transgression of a multitude of efforts including his agent, his public relations person, his medicinal distributor, and his prophetic "friend."
"Survivor" is guaranteed to be a contemporary classic. Palahniuk has a clever writing style that is easy to get lost in. Never once did I lose the story but often enough, the story kept reminding me that this is, in fact, the world we live in. You won't see this side of Extreme Home Make-Over or live-Plastic Surgery. Like "Fight Club," there is enough in this story to make this story completely implausible; however, there is enough truth to recognize the similarities and truths with our own culture.
I fully recommend "Survivor" to anyone who is getting tired of prime-time cable television and anyone who has once thought that maybe the world is actually going to heck in a hand basket.

Razor Sharp Satire and Dryly Funny
But to others that have read and enjoyed the book, I ask you this.. When Tender Branson is heading toward oblivion in a 747, he says that Fertility had told him that he already knows how to rescue himself if he chooses to, But "I'm too stupid to know how." This has left me curious. What do you think Fertility meant to happen to Tender?

Safe to say, you haven't read anything like it
I was reading this book and wondering how he was ever going to make an anit-hero out of this guy. The anti part I get, but the hero part I wasn't so sure about. How can anyone do anything that the main character does in this book end up comping out sympathetic in the end. That is the beauty of the book and why it is very readable. The book was very original and I enjoyed it completely in that it did not subscribe in any way to the ideals of what a hero should be or how a heroine should react. It is safe to say that you have never read anything quite like it, and as an avid reader that is a nice thing to find. I have rather strangely found myself to be a new fan of Chuck Palahniuk.

Wonderfully Dark
To say that Mr. Palahniuk's works are strange and dystopian is to admit that the Kalahari is a bit dry in summer. In other words, it is a drastic understatement. As with his other books,
Survivor provides
an interesting, and extremely disturbing protagonist. In this case the object of our occasional affection and frequent revulsion is one Tender Branson, former cult member, televangelist, speaker and currently the narrator of the book; undertaking that task alone from 30,000 feet in a jet set to crash in the Australian Outback.
If that's not strange enough, the fact that he is the last, and least observant, of his suicide cult provide an interesting commentary on the nature of belief. The book also provides a dark, if not necessarily inaccurate portrayal of popular religion in America, and for that, it is well worth the read.
