Excellent challenge to existing notions of marketing

Seth Godin does an excellent job of making us sit and take notice. His style is easy to read and I found myself leafing through each page with a smile on my face. His energy and enthusiasm almost leap off the page!

A word of caution though - it's easy to get swept up and carried along with him, and I did feel that at times he got a little carried away with himself. In particular he strongly critised some companies for some of their strategies by making bold assumptions about what consumers would or would not want. I found myself not always agreeing with his assumptions.

One should also remember that spotting and disecting the purple cows of this world once they have been out in the proverbial pasture for some time is not a difficult task to do - and in this case Mr. Godin has the benefit of 20/20 hindsight. Figuring out whether a given business has a purple cow or just a plain brown cow might not always be so easy to spot in advance - even for him!

That said - I think this book is a must-read for anyone who is involved in marketing or who has their own business. I found it inspirational, energising and easy to read. I think it forms a great base to present an alternative point of view to theories put forward by other books or other "marketing people".

I was recommended this book by a marketing person who told me that this is the only marketing book I'll ever need. Personally I think that is a little naive, but your bookshelf should certainly not be without this book!

This is a great read. Seth has a gift turning his thoughts, ideas and experiences into text for others to take advantage of.

I apply his learnings through my personal and business life, most recently with em3 People and Technology, an IT company in Melbourne Australia.

Highly recommended, some important lessons, and easy to read.

do something remarkable

This book really struck a chord with me. While the underlying message is simple and obvious, why do so many companies seem to have trouble striving for something outside of mediocracy? Whether designing a new service or product, planning your marketing strategy, or even in your thinking about how to manage your team or project - are you satisfied with the status quo? Has that been working for you?

In most companies, it isn't working, and yet people trudge along replaying the same scenarios again and again. I can't tell you how many times I've seen companies I've worked with fall into the same traps that I read about and studied during my MBA years. It's truly amazing.

While not as groundbreaking as Ideavirus or Permission Marketing, Godin's words ring true in this book. Companies need to strive for something better -- or they won't be around for long. Doing something remarkable is not about creating a temporary buzz, but about looking for a different/unique/original/special path to serving your customer's needs. And if you can make something truly remarkable, your chances for success are much better.

After you read this book, you really need to follow it up with 'All Marketers Are Liars,' which takes the baton and runs with it.

Well Done

A conglomeration of ideas and writings from many different authors. I recommend the audiobook format. Seth Godin's speaking voice makes this audio especially interesting. I prefer the books written only by Seth Godin, however, as he truly puts his heart into what he writes.

A little book with a lot of ideas

I like books that offer all kinds of marketing ideas, and this book does just that. It's a little overpriced, but I guess just one good idea is worth some extra dollars. A lot of the things that make a purple cow stand out take a lot of money. Fun to read. A little education course on what works and what doesn't.
