Beyond Sustainable

This book does a great job of showing modern innovations which lead to a smarter way of life. It describes new ways of thinking and living, which will give our future generations a fighting chance.

Green Capitalism. Who would have thought!

This book and the ideas it contains are LONG overdue. This in not your typical environmentalist book even though one of the authors was an active Greenpeace member. The ideas in this book are refreshing and powerful. The current concept of recycling, as wonderful as it is and all of you need to do it ;), is fatally flawed since very little is actually recycled but downcycled on its way to the dump. This is because the vast majority of the products we use are not designed from the drawing board to be reused and recycled. The ideas and concepts presented here are that we should not work to be less bad but strive to be good. The only way to do this is to mimic nature with our product designs. Waste=Food. Create our products in a way that our consumption of them actually benefits the planet instead of harming it. This is not a how to manual to "teach" you how to live but an idea manual to help you make good choices, whether you own a business that manufactures goods or a consumer of those goods. There are products out there right now that follow the guidelines of waste=food and many more on the way. The human race has struggled long and hard to get where we are so why should we give all that up and live like primitives. By using nature as a model and our brains for thinking, we can create an new industrial revolution which will allow our existence to actually benefit the planet instead of harming it.

pro-business & pro-environment?!?!?

This book contains the type of pro-business thought that is required to make progress by maximizing natural resources, eliminating waste & making leaps forward with regard to climate change in today's world driven by economics. change your environmental paradigm

I found this book to be both illuminating and enlightening! While it could have been a bit better organized from an information transmittal perspective, the authors do a great job of changing the terms of the debate from "reduce, reuse, recycle" to "rethink and redesign" the use of the product. Their focus on quality design changes the paradigm of how to be environmentally conscious or conscientious and makes you rethink every single facet of living life on Earth beyond just "sustainability", "green construction" or "going organic".

Inspiring approach to design

The basic idea of Cradle To Cradle is to take the end of a product's life into account when designing it, and to make sure it is still useful afterwards. The ideal is to avoid garbage altogether. The approach is positive, not saying we shouldn't do things, but rather that we should do things smartly, and take a few more considerations into account when making things.

This is an inspiring book full of good ideas. Since buying the book, I have actually tried to realise a design in a Cradle To Cradle manner, and it worked out nicely. Instead of a wasteful pergola that is impregnated with poisons, I now have one that lasts long because I used wood from nearby forests, that can be composted at the end of its life because the wood requires no treatment at all. I didn't use nails but screws, so all metal parts are options for recycling. That's how easy this approach can be.
