Love Conquers Hate

Immaculee's story is one of the most incredible and inspiring true stories that I've ever read. First, she paints a picture of her life and her relationships with her loving family and neighbors in Rwanda. Prior to 1994, her father was a respected leader in the community. Her mother was looked up to. Often they taught Tutsi children and helped their Tutsi neighbors. Their country was a beautiful green, sunlit Eden where she grew up contented, happy, and trusting. But that all changed in 1994. After the death of the Hutu president, Hutu hatemongers took to the radio air-waves and worked up a frenzy against the Tutsi population. Before long, machete wielding throngs took to the streets and burst into homes with the intention of wiping out the entire Tutsi tribe in one of the most brutal and intense genocides of modern history. Men, women, and children were slaughtered mercilessly...their bodies left to rot in the sweltering sun. Evil incarnate held sway in Eden.
But in the midst of this darkness, some small lights of hope still burned. First, in the courage and compassion of pastor Murinzi, a Hutu minister who put his own life and family at risk by daring to shelter 8 Tutsi women in a hidden bathroom for 91 days. And then in Immaculee herself as she overcame the temptation to hate and grew through the harrowing experience in both faith and forgiveness. You see the hand of God intervening in the many God-incidences that finally guided them to safety. But the most remarkable aspect of Immaculee's story unfolds at the end, when she returns to confront her family's murderers--and forgives. As light conquers darkness, love conquers hate. This is one gut-wrenching but inspiring story!

Inspiring Story

Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst The Rwandan Holocaust by Immaculee Ilibagiza is a heart wrenching story of a young girl in Rwandan who was home from college to spend Easter with her family who were devout Catholics. A 3 month slaughter of one million people ensued. She only survived by hiding in a small bathroom for over 90 days with several other women, but she never lost her faith or her connection with God. If your faith is being shaken by today's troubles and tribulations... If you are searching for HOPE in a seemingly hopeless world...

Forgiveness amidst genocide.....Amazing Grace!!!

My best friend handed me her copy of this book and said that I must read it. A few weeks went by, and I found it still sitting on the table. I picked it up and could not put it down again. I took it with me to every appointment, read it in the car, in doctor's offices, in bed, in the kitchen while cooking....everywhere. Immaculee's specific accounts of witnessing the brutal killings of so many family and friends was almost too painful to read. The horrors were beyond any comprehension. Her physical experiences were beyond imagination, and her spiritual experiences were miraculous. Her survival was a miracle. I wondered if I could ever reach the level of forgiveness that she prayed for and realized. From then on, whenever I was lamenting my lot in Life and the challenges I have been dealt, I just thought of Immaculee. No self-pity could ever survive this reading!!! Amazing Grace is Immaculee and anyone fortunate enough to be touched by her words and her spirit.
