Sophies World

"Sophie's World" is a book about the history of philosophy and how a teenager named Sophie learns this history herself. The book mixes fiction and nonfiction as it goes back and forth between the tale of Sophie's world, and the the world of Philosophy.

My favorite part of this book was when Sophie first recieves three typed pages in her mailbox as an introduction to the course she is about to take. She has to figure out who is sending these letters, and at the same time try to understand what they are saying. This first letter she recieves is also the greatest in the book, as it really makes you think about everything you do and how you live your life in general.

I would recomend this book to anyone who wants an interesting introduction to philosophy. It makes you think of how you got on this earth and why you are here. This book provides many different philosophers views on many different topics. This book forces you to think in new ways and learn about philosophy, even if you've never read a word of it before. "Sophie's World" is a story filled with interesting and unexpected events, and at the same time it is a great introduction to philosophy.

A well crafted introduction to philosophy

I so envy the talent of an author like Jostein Gaarder who is able to craft such a clever book. If someone has no interest in philosophy at all, they might find the book boring. However, for anyone who has even a passing interest in the subject, this book will grab their attention, entertain them, and provide them with a solid philosophy 101 introduction to the subject. Using the vehicle of a novel, Mr. Gaarder provided a thought provoking read that weaves fiction and non-fiction into and out of each other many times. I think this book should be required reading for everyone at some point in their late high school or college years. The world would funtion as a better place if every human on the planet possessed at least the basic knowledge provided in this book. Unfortunately, probably less then one hundredth of one percent of people in the world even come close to understanding what this book teaches.

A Great Introduction to the World of Philosophy (for Young Readers)

As a philosophy major now in college, i can say that this book is what introduced me to the world of and progression of philosophy.

That being said, it is truly a great way to learn ONLY THE BASICS about philosophy (in a pretty entertaining way). The mystery side to the novel, helps make this intro to philosophy a little more enjoyable to read. I personally think that this book should be required for all young high school students.

I only gave this book four stars because if you are looking for a good mystery, keep looking. This is a long book with the actual plot/mystery definitely taking a back seat to the education of young Sophie in Philosophy. On the other hand, if you are looking for a good reference book in philosophy, this is not that either. For that purpose it is far too brief.

Fantastical Journey thru Some Basic Philosophy!

Here we have a fun, eye opening trip through a good portion of western philosophy, starting with the Greeks and finishing just past Existentialism. Truly a fun ride throughout, we journey with Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, through Hume, Kant, Marx, finsihing up with a very nice explanation of Sartre's Existentialism. Perhaps the best section is on Darwin, an outstanding capsulation of Evolution, including the famous color mutations of moths in recent day England due to environmental changes. Sophie is never less than a wondrous curiosity seeker, and her teacher almost as good. The labyrinth trip through what is real and what may be be is near flawless with the addition of 2 similar characters. Plus short appearances by certain fictional characters like Carroll's Alice make this book a real fun knockout for seekers of all ages and backgrounds!
