Looking forward to the next book Dexter vs the Martians.

Dexter in his role on December 25th as Santa Claus is kidnapped by Martians who wonder why the children of Miami are unhappy. Dexter kills off the evildoers with the help of good Martians ... wait... I seem to have confused this Santa Claus vs. the Martians.

Ok this plot is sillier that that... Never mind.

Also disappointed

The first two Dexter books were good fun; this one was unfunny, and the supernatural element was unwelcome. The last three pages were fun, though, when Dexter's very entertaining take on the human world returned at last. This book almost felt like the backstory notes an author might need to think about, but not necessarily publish. Not that I don't appreciate Mr. Lindsay's invention: Dexter's world is gorgeously deranged; I'll take what glimpses I can get.

Of a piece

"Dexter in the Dark" is of a piece with the snarky first person + internal doppelganger narration of the first two books, except that his internal doppelganger, or 'dark passenger', goes on hiatus.

The supernatural element that bothers some reviewers was thoroughly established in the first two novels, as was Lindsay's cute habit of writing against formulaic expectation.

I'm listening to the Audiobook,and it's the same actor who read the previous novel and perhaps the first novel as well. I think his cadences and the ironic undertones of his reading render well the delightful depravity of our serialist storyteller.

Not great literature by any standard, but a good romp nonetheless.
