What a fantastic read!
I have to say, "R is for
Ricochet
" is now one of my favorites in Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone series. It starts out slowly: As usual, Grafton takes time to set the stage for the story and introduce all the characters. When the story takes off, however, it grabs you by the collar and doesn't let go.
Many of the characters in this book were exceptionally well-developed, and even familiar characters seemed to explore new depths. I found Reba to be one of the most entertaining characters Kinsey has ever encountered. In fact, I would love to see her again in future books.
Five stars from me!

R IS FOR RICOCHET
I enjoyed reading this book very much. The personal tidbits only enhance the detective story. I disagree with the people unhappy with the romantic parts. Ms. Milhone is old enough to get her head on straight and enjoy a quality man at this time in her life and I don't need a sex manual to get the picture. Her writing is better with each read. Kinsey seems like an old friend and I enjoy my time spent with her. As usual, I am looking forward to the next story.

disappointing plot
I always look forward to the books in the alphabet series, but the last few books have been on a downward spiral. This one centers around a money-laundering scheme which makes the boredom set in right away. There really is no way to make a plot like that suspenseful so Grafton throws in a new romance for Kinsey. Kinsey basically sucks at romance making it a plot point does not work. The only thing that saves this book somewhat are some interesting characters, eigthy-six year old Henry, Kinsey's landlord, and Reba, a woman that Kinsey is hired to essentially baby-sit for her first few days out of jail. Reba initally took the fall for the money-laundry, but she's been burned and now is keen on revenge. I wouldn't mind if she made a return in a future novel as Kinsey's pal and/or helper. The characters bump a two-star rating up to three

A bump in the road
I don't know what happened. I loved A through Q, but Grafton has faltered with R. The first half is dedicated to three romances, the subplot with the elderly brothers being the only good one. Some of the scenes seem forced, which is so atypical of this author. The character of Reba is poorly constructed and rings false. There is no chemistry between Reba and Kinsey, or Kinsey and her latest boyfriend. The detective work is nonexistent until the last 30 pages. This is not vintage Grafton! I still recommend her fans read it though, as she's always entertaining, but don't expect her usual caliber of work. Let's hope this one was just a small bump in the road, which is to be expected in such a long series.
