The book was great I read it twice.

I read it in first grade and in third grade last week ( 3-19-97). I thought it was good because the pictures told you a lot about the story. My favorite part was when Elmer made a bridge out of crocidiles.I am 9 years old.

This book and series is a read-aloud must for Second Grade.

My Second Grade class was captivated by R. Gannett's series of three stories beginning with My Father's Dragon. Old classics never die, they get revived as new generatations find their golden gift to literacy. Put this book on the top of your must share list at school.

One of my favorite books for 5-7 year olds

Don't miss the next two books in this series: Elmer and the Dragon and the Dragons of Blueland. These are the first chapter books that I have read aloud to my children and they have both loved the creative fantasy in them. If you can find a copy of them with at least some color illustrations inside (not just on the cover), but hey are difficult to find. These books are funny, creative and feature an indepentant, quick-thinking child hero. THe illustrations are really great too

A wonderful fantasy book to read to your child

My father read this to me when I was a child and it is one of my favorite memories. Told from the perspective of the protagonist's child, it is the story of an adventurous boy who finds a land full of speaking animals. The dragon named in the title is kept prisoner by the animals and "my father" attempts to rescue the dragon. This story features wonderful characters. Both you and your child will treasure it.

Nostalgia

I recently bought this book for my seven year old daughter. As I thumbed through the book, the illustrations and story came flooding back to me. It had been a favorite storybook of mine in my childhood. Unfortunately, I had forgotten this book. I was grateful to have the experience of rediscovering it. Further, I was happy to have the pleasure of seeing that my daughter was as enthralled with the story and pictures as I had been as a child. The illustrations and story are superb. I highly recommend this book
