The best book I've ever read!

This book was one of the saddest I have ever read. I am a very unemotional person, but I cried several times while reading this book. They Cage the Animals at Night shocked me into reality. I realized that horrifying things do happen. I think that Jennings Burch is an extremely strong person to have survived through the many portrayed ordeals of neglect, physical abuse, and emotional abuse.

The Best Book I have Read in 5 years!!!!!!!!!

This book was the best ever, If Jennings made any other books I would buy them on the opening day, I hear they are coming out with a Movie and I cant wait. This book brought me to tears 4 times and I read it in 6 hours!Nothing compairs, not even my classic favorites!!!

Touches All the Emotions

We read this book in a class called Anchor Time in the 8th grade. I was touched by the story. As were many others in the class. Since we read it aloud it had more of a effect. I can also remeber my teacher telling us how the story effected her. This is a great book and it touches all your emotions.

Harrowing but believable

I feel for Mr. Burch, who shows his courage as a vulnerable young boy who grew into a successful man.

Another story lesser known is Ken Grant, a man who has been driven into homelessness and joblessness perhaps by the government itself where he worked at a defense contractor and had a story published about his search for his father. After the story appeared in the newspaper he became chronically unemployable, was denied a decent job with decent health insurance for over 10 years.Grant found state and state subcontractor records santized and perhaps his own book manuscript viewed as a political weapon. Grant wrote an autobiography detailing his own experiences both positive and negative and with a spiritual, not a political, bent. Grant discusses among other things how God led him through his own tribulations as a handicapped, abandoned and abused and neglected youngster in New England.

Grant has never been able to get decent work since his own story came out and it has been a question whether political forces have been at work to "teach him a lesson" for 'daring' to offer objective commentary on life in state child care. Grant wrote of triumphs in finding private individuals who cared and his work is a testimony to their caring as much as his own narrative.

Grant and Burch have much in common.Grant wrote his book first but Burch succeeded in getting it published where Grant has been the ongoing target of harassment and such.

They Cage the Animals At Night

This book They Cage the Animals at Night is the best book I have ever read. Now I don't usually read and I'm so glad that my teacher had us read this book because then I would have never found the ONE book that has changed my life. It made me think of how I can change the way these children who don't have a family or any friends can still have a good childhood. Now I'm only 16 years old and before this book I had no idea what I was going to do with my life and after this book now I know what I want to do, I want to help children like Jennings. I think EVERY single high school student should read this book and if your out of High School you also HAVE to read this book.
