An enjoyable, light read.

I only started this novel yesterday and finished it. The books text is light and reads very quickly. Some have branded the book as being "trite" or having a generic update quality to it. I'm giving it 5 stars, because I think while bits of it are predictable, the book isn't looking to be "the Stranger" or even "Catcher in the Rye", even if it does cite them. As a modern coming of age bit, it does very well, Although I do wish that I had been handed a copy of this at 16, instead of reading it at 22 upon finally finding a copy of it at a bookstore. Although better late then never, it touches upon some familar, and honest themes that most will be able to relate to(while reading this, I envisioned it at my old high school and saw alot of the characters as people i'd known). Alot of the cultural references I found very enjoyable, from the books, the music (the smiths and ride!), and even the films will be something that most people who've had a "outsiders taste" will be fond of, even if its not exactly their particular outsiders taste.

This book came along right when I needed it...

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of those books that you'll either love or you'll hate. Much like the main character's English teacher describes L'Etranger, it's 'very easy to read, but very hard to read well." And I can see how some people might think it trite or boring, or a bit over-angsty. I feel the exact opposite, but hey, to each his own. I think this is one of those books that came along right when I needed it. Much in the way that I read the Catcher in the Rye when I was 15 years old and uncertain about my place in the world and that book helped me put things into perspective, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a good book to read when you're feeling mellow and introspective and really want to think about things for awhile. Or at least it was for me. The character of Charlie was an introspective, overly empathetic mess, but wondering about his actions and thinking about their repercussions made me not want to put this book down the entire time that I was reading it. I love love loved this story and would recommend it to anyone in the mood for a painfully honest and true portrayal of what it's like to grow up and wonder if you'll ever find your niche.

A great narrative!

Anyone who's ever attended high school in America should read this book. Chbosky captures every awkward moment, insecure feeling, and paranoid delusion that defines Freshman year. Bravo!
