The heart of the Western frontier.

In the small town of Lonesome Dove in the late 1800's, ex-Texas Rangers turned rancher Gus and Call live a quiet existence in the dry barren countryside. The average day for Gus is usually passed drinking whisky on the porch, talking to the pigs and maybe strolling up the street to the bar where he will spend the evening playing cards. As Gus puts it--he and Call killed all the people that made the Texas frontier interesting, such as warring Indians and bandits.

One day the peace of the ranch is shattered by the arrival of Jake Spoon, an old comrade, who describes the wilds of Montana as a paradise for ranchers. This sets in motion a cattle drive from Texas to Montana which leads to many adventures from battle with nature, bandits and Indians, as well as romantic encounters.

Lonesome Dove is a western tale of epic proportions. McMurtry's eloquent writing and vivid characterizations create a warmly humorous look at human relationships and the history of the American West. This is a book that can be read over and over for the comedic dialogue, inspiration from bravery and fortitude in the face of hardships, as well as the insight into human lifespan development. Highly recommended!

The Great American Novel! (I'd give it 10 stars!).

I have never really cared for Westerns so I started this book with some trepidation. My worries soon evaporated as I read the opening chapter, this was no western in the traditional sense, but a book about people and relationships in the harsh American frontier. I was soon enthralled by the characters involved in this epic cattle drive. the quick witted Gus McCrae, the Tancturn Woodrow Call, the kid Newt, Jake Spoon, the womanizing ex ranger, Lorena the prostitute, and Gus's lost love Claire. The book is over 800 pages long but I have never been sadder to finish a book.

A good read that will take you away

I read this book because it is my mother's favorite book and she is a prolific reader. I started my summer with it. I'd always avoided it in the past because of its length. I wasn't disappointed ; in fact I was swept away. It has larger than life characters that are compelling and interesting. Two former Texas Rangers, Gus and Call, decide to take a herd of cattle all the way north to Montana. Their adventures make one long for those wide-open spaces of the frontier and prairie. Gus is such a wise, easy-going guy; a humble hero........well, sometimes he's a little cocky! He is, most assuredly, quite lovable. The book describes the difficulty and dangers of living in the 1800's while also touching on the beauty and slower pace of simpler times. The western genre is not something I am overly familiar with but, I would say if one were going to read a single western, Lonesome Dove would be the book to read.

one of the best novels ever

Quite simply, this is one of the most enjoyable novels I have ever read. The characters and story of Lonesome Dove get inside your heart and never leave. This novel has it all: exquisite writing, memorable characters, exciting drama, and deep layers of interpretation. How many western novels can claim to be a page-turner? I tore through this novel and when I finished, I was hungry for more. I did not like the sequels nearly as much. Lonesome Dove is just, well, the perfect novel.
