One of my favorites!
I enjoyed reading this book. The movie was not as
good
.
A well-crafted story - get audio version for extras
I really didn't appreciate how well done this book was until listening to the interview with John Berendt on the audio-book version. Berendt spent years on this book and it really shows. Some books don't seem like they took a lot of effort to write, and although they're
good
the craftsmanship doesn't show. Not in this case. I highly recommend listening to the audio version, even if just for the Berendt interview, where you learn how he made the book and how Savannah and its characters reacted to the book's huge success. For example, Berendt didn't meet Jim Williams until after the first conviction, so his introductory chapter where he sees Danny storm in the room didn't happen. Very clever writing. He also talks about Lee Adler's reaction to the book as well...
If you go to Net
library
.com you can download the audio version for free if your library has a agreement with them.

As charming as the town itself
John Berendt has an affinity for description. Everything from the lilt of the Savannah accent to the strangely attractive characters. He does an exhaustive job of getting to the basis of this true life crime and trials with entertaining interviews that move the story along splendidly. You feel like you're walking through Savannah when you read his book.
The ecentric characters made the story great
I just finished reading "
Midnight
in the
Garden
of
Good
and
Evil
" and found it very interesting. It is the well crafted story of John Berendt (the author from New York)who begins to rent a place in Savannah and stay there for extended periods of time (while traveling back and forth from New York). In the process he begins to meet many of the residents of Savannah, in particular it's more eccentric ones. The "lady' Chablis, an art student whose former name was Frank, is unforgetable. After spending time in the city, John is introduced to Jim Williams, a wealthy antique dealer who is later accused of the murder of 21 year old, Danny Handsford (a drug using, beer drinking, fist-swinging, mixed-up young man). John follows the trials of Williams, and even goes to voodoo rituals with him to put curses on those involved in the trials. This book is very enjoyable, and uncovers some of the mystique that the people of Savannah try so hard to preserve in their small city.
