Simply Amazing
This book was given to me as a birthday gift from my grandfather, who was actually present in Leyte Gulf. Hornfischer did an out
stand
ing job summarizing events and going in depth into the lives of the
sailors
who were there. I could not put this book down after I began reading. All of the Sailors of Taffy 3 are some of the most brave men to ever serve in World War Two and I am proud to have my grandfather as one of them.
The US Navy's Finest Hour
How could I not like this book? My father was a surviving sailor on the USS St. Lo, sunk in this battle, and the first US warship to be sunk by kamikaze in WW2.
Impeccably researched, Hornfischer uses a personal "on the scene" wri
ting style
using the thoughts and remembrances of the actual survivors to tell the history of this battle in story form rather than dry facts.
This is perhaps one of the best WW2 naval history books I have read in my 58 year lifetime.
The bravery of Taffy 3 shown in this book is truly the story of the US Navy's finest hour.

Magnificent
Warning: do not start reading this book if you have anything else to do. You will not be able to put it down until you finish it.
Hornfischer does a superb job of telling an intensely human story of the destroyermen who risked and gave their lives in a seemingly hopeless endeavor - yet at the same time gives the reader a full picture that allows the sarifice of these men to be placed in context.
Anyone with even a passing interest in World War II, the sea, or human drama will enjoy this book.
Great read
I read this book while on vacation seated on a sunny beach looking at the ocean. Every time I saw a ship pass by my mind wandered and I daydreamed about taking place in the books battle.
A unbeleivable account of valor on the high seas. A must read for all naval buffs. The book is fairly long but you will read through it quickly.

A top notch telling of amazing heroism.
I purchased this novel after seeing a History Channel special on the "
Tin
Can
Sailors
". The hour long documentary had been truly enthralling and I wanted to learn more. After reading "
Last
Stand
of the Tin Can Sailors..." I realized that the documentary had not nearly done justice to this amazing tale. This story is so well told and so amazing that one would not be surprised if it were a fictional novel. The fact that it is a true store make it all the more astonishing.
The accounting of the action as a heavily outnumbered and undersized American force protects the flanks of the Phillipine Invasion force against a Japanese flotilla looking to make one last gasp at tipping the Pacific war in their favor is first class from start to finish. One of the finest WWII stories I have ever read.
