To be read before bed, and then after...

The author states in the book that "sexual energy is the most subtle and powerful energy in our existence." Sex certainly ranks with hunger and thirst (and could probably be equated with these) as the most important human need. But when one seeks to fulfill this need, should one take it on spontaneously without aforethought or with planning and intelligence? Should sexual partners, with care and diligence, fill their minds with carefully planned tasks before they lay on their beds? Should they both strive to become perfect lovers? The author clearly believes that they do, and she has, with the inspiration of various aspects of Eastern philosophy, given an outline, a summary, of the many variants possible for enjoying the best of physical indulgences.

Beyond doubt all of the advice in this book is helpful. Readers will no doubt want to get under the covers after they peruse what is between the covers. The book motivates as well as it excites. It is an advice manual as well as a work of art, due in no small measure to the drawings that decorate its pages. Motivated no doubt by marketing requirements and to provoke a certain aesthetic quality, the figures in the drawings are both ectomorphs. But endomorphs and mesomorphs enjoy sexual pleasure also. Yes, there is Tao, Kama Sutra, and Tantra inside its bindings, but more sexual diversity training is needed here. The sinewy muscles of the ectomorph are to be compared with the soft contours of the endomorph. And dark shades look so delightful against light ones: brown looks good against beige, and intertwined with it. Ebony cylinders mesh well with ivory triangles. Sex is a superposition of the spectrum.

And then there are the senses. What of hearing the birdsong in the morning? Strong acoustic signals are a telltale sign of satisfaction. The reverberations of orgasm titillate the eardrum. Sex is echolalia. And strong aroma, whether from scented candles, fine perfume or cologne, or from natural secretions, gives proof of the need for the olfactory system. And the author says that colors express moods and emotions. She is right, and more frequently than not, the senses become intermixed. Sex is synesthesia.

As in ballroom dancing, the goal of the male lover should be his partner; her pleasure is primary, to be optimized; to then be followed by his. But he is allowed to follow as much as lead. The woman is to be elevated (even literally) and her mysteries penetrated until they are exhausted. With the woman in mind, beautiful as they all are, sometimes quantity is important as quality. Once, twice, three times for the lady...

And what shall be said about the joining of two by the ring, or by the supposed curse of monogamy? In this situation, with time, each partner begins to know every nuance of the other, every concentrated area of neurons, and timing becomes almost perfect. Some would call this overtraining, others optimum pleasure. Informal statistics indicates the mean time between sexual encounters increases, and the mean time to achieve orgasm decreases. However the quality index increases, and with less energy needed for even greater pleasure, monogamy is indeed a bargain.

But do we need to strive for perfection always? Do we need to become perfect lovers? Is there an algorithm of sex that guarantees the optimization of pleasure? If there is, and if perfection is to be achieved, it must not be accomplished too fast. We must not exhaust the possibilities in too short a span of time. Much should be reserved for later rendezvous. We should be like archaeologists who abandon a dig in anticipation of better dating techniques in the future.
