Best of the bunch

You: Staying Young is the best of the "You" series. It's the perfect melding of "You: The Owner's Manual" and "You: on a Diet."

The book is as easy to read as possible when dealing with the human body and as usual, Dr. OZ and Roizen deliver information with their usual sense of humor about your health. In fact, one drawing made me laugh out loud--you'll know which one I'm talking about once you read the book.

The information is motivating-the doctors are hopeful and encouraging.

Impressive Amount of Info

I saw Dr. Oz talk about his book on Oprah and immediately bought a copy. It isn't a fast read because it is packed with information. I immediately bought extra copies and gave them away. I am slowly changing my way of eating in certain areas simply because of the information. I took the book to my Endocrinologist and asked him to look at a few pages and give me his imput. I finally had to ask him to put the book so I could have my appointment. It is written in a very readable style. The charts are done with cartooning and I take extra time to figure things out. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in living more fully.

Provides real information; not speculation.

I think that in the main, this is a terrific book. It blends top science with an easy to read format. Some reviewers have grumbled about the cartoons and the folksy script, but it makes the material accessable to everyone.

So my comments:

The good: top of the line science. Real information is provided and recommendations are not based on speculation or weird theories.

The bad: I wonder about the emphasis on supplements. There is so much in the media that is contradictory to the advice here, that it is hard for the layperson to make sense of it. I still don't really know what to take after reading it since I know my doctor is against most supplements.

My other frustration is that I know that most health care systems with their emphasis on cost containment rather than wellness, won't pay for many of the most important tests mentioned in the book. Most of us can't really afford what is recommended. Not the fault of the authors, but frustrating none-the-less. That said, this is a worthwhile read.
