This Atmospheric Book Cries Out to be a Movie
Having already been SO widely reviewed here, I hesitate to add one more. This was a great read and as so many have said, filled with dramatic twists and turns and so much atmosphere. I'm giving this a four rather than a five star because it won't appeal quite as much to a reader who doesn't naturally find some intrinsic mysterious quality in old books and manuscripts. The story doesn't drag for a moment and the revelations will be satisfying. I won't cover the plot as it's been so well covered by others but do want to share that when reading this book, you won't be able to stop yourself from thinking that this would be an incredible film to shoot in very atmospheric locations with award winning opportunities for some of the most accomplished actresses in Hollywood and elsewhere- think Cate Blanchette, Nicole Kidman, and maybe Meryl Streep or Judi Dench, as Vida Winter to name a few- to really show their character and emotional range in a story that would be both mysterious and gripping to the viewer from beginning to end. Think of Kidman in the Others and Blanchette in The Gift. This is a toasty book to read when the weather turns cool and you have few distractions, because you won't want to put it down from beginning to end.

Not so good
The author had some really great ideas, some of the writing was very well done, but I'm sorry I thought the story was a bit vapid. I the characters, but didn't really feel connected with them. I felt like I was reading a book that would appear on Life Time on Saturday Afternoon.
liked, not loved
This is a fabulous writer who has an amazing facility of the english language. This was an intriquing
novel
and offered a good discussion for book clubs. It was slow at first, but then it was quite easy to get swept away into the mystery.
