Excellent First Book

Jennifer Weiner completely captures her audience with Cannie's wit, dry humor, and strength. From the first page to the end of the novel, this book is a wonderful read. Cannie's issues with weight, her male problems, and her family issues are all something everyone can relate to. (although maybe not those exact situations) While the things that happen to Cannie after meeting Maxi are out of proportion to reality...those events are part of what makes this book so good. A fictional novel is supposed to be just that...fiction. And no one wants to read the tedious, day to day humdrum of your average Joe. Weiner does a fantastic job of drawing the reader in and keeping their attention through her unlikely scenarios. The characters are stunningly developed, and the dialogue funny and realistic. Absolutely wonderful read!

A very enjoyable chick-lit novel

I really enjoyed this book, although I was somewhat alarming at Cannie's pining for the obviously unsuitable Bruce. No woman needs a man, however pleasant and kindhearted, who has a habit of smoking pot and whose life is susidized by his parents while he "writes his dissertation." Just say no to boyfriends like that!

Cannie's character was really nicely developed, although the secondary characters could have used a bit of work. I'm thinking primarily of Maxi and Sam. Cannie's mother was well done.

The plot moved along very nicely, although there was a feeling of unreality about the Hollywood period.

This was a very entertaining and touching story.

poignant and addictive

I highly recommend this book-- it's very feel-good and I enjoyed reading it, it's very emotional at times which can be difficult if you're an easy weeper, but on the whole very funny as well...
