The Tale of Despereaux

The Tale of Despereaux
The Tale of Desperaux by Kate Dicamillo is a good book that I would recommend to everyone because it is a great imaginative story. The Tale of Despereaux is about a tiny mouse with huge ears who falls on love with the princess. The mouse's name is Despereaux. Despereaux is sent to the dungeon, because he allowed the princess to touch his head. Despereaux escapes from the dungeon. Roscuro, one of the rats from the dungeon convinces the kitchen girl to make the princess follow him and the kitchen girl down to the dungeon, because he hates the princess. The rat won't lead the princess and the kitchen girl out of the dungeon. Despereaux has to find out how to save the princess.

Despereaux is a very courageous mouse. He forgave his dad for betraying him even though, he could have died. Despereaux goes back to the dungeon to save the princess, even though the first time he went down to the dungeon the rats almost ate him. The dungeon is dark, scary and full of rats that like to eat mice, and Despereaux is a very little mouse. He is also very different from the other mice. Despereaux is so different that his brother and sister try and teach him how to act more like a mouse. Despereaux would rather run than scurry, and he would rather read the books instead of nibbling in the pages. Even his his mom thinks he is very strange and sees him as a disappointment.

I think everyone should read this book because it is a great imaginative story. The Tale of Despereaux is definitely one of the best books I've ever read!

The Tale of Despereaux
By: Kate Dicamillo

Review by: Colin M.

As soon as I opened the book, The Tale of Despereaux, I loved it. One reason I loved it was because it is very descriptive. When the author, Kate Dicamillo is describing something, she really knows how to put a picture in your mind. For example when she describes the dungeon I can almost see the darkness and gloominess around me, and smell the dank smell.

The tale is about four main characters. First, there is Despereaux, a mouse with large ears. Second, there is Roscuro who is a rat who lives in the dungeon. Third there is Princess Pea, who is a princess that lives in the castle. And then there is Miggery Sow, a serving girl in the castle that has one, impossible wish. How these four people change each other's lives is one thing about this book that makes it so exciting.

Another reason that I liked The Tale of Despereaux is because it is actually four books in one. The first three books tell about the main characters, and the last book is about all of them. The last book tells how Despereaux needs to save Princess Pea from the rat Roscuro. Each book makes you curious to find out what happens next, and how it will all tie in together.

If you like books with all different kinds of genre, this book is for you because it is adventure, fantasy, and romance all at once. It is adventure because Despereaux needs to save Princess Pea. It is fantasy because there are talking mice and rats. It is romance because Despereaux falls in love with Princess Pea. This is just another reason why I liked The Tale of Despereaux.

I love The Tale of Despereaux because there is lots of twists, turns and surprises. Also, the chapters leave you at cliffhangers, and you want to find out what happens next. It is the kind of book that when you need to go to bed, you beg "just one more minute, please?" There are many good things about it, and there isn't anything that I did not like! To find out what happens to all the characters, you need to read the book!

The Tale of Despereaux

I've never really thought much of mice, rats, and
magical kingdoms, but Kate Dicamillo brought me to the
kingdom of Dor, and showed me how wonderful mice like
Despereaux could be. You could always tell what each
character was thinking, like when the author said
things like, "and a wonderful thing happened,
Despereaux fell in love the moment he saw the
beautiful Princess Pea."
With in the book, there are four stories. Each story
is a different perspective of one given character, but
the fourth story just wraps it up and brings all of
the characters together. The story says things like
"Long before this happened" and give great details
about the character's back round story. Then, it
explains how they got to meet the other characters.
For example, it shows when Chiaroscuro, (a rat),
realizes how extremely horrid it is to be a rat.
Chiaroscuro lived in the dungeon of the castle.
Knowing now how bad it was to be a rat, Chiaroscuro's
heart broke.
My favorite character would be Despereaux, because he
might be small, but he was brave. Despereaux had big
ears, which made him adorable. He was brave because he
went to the dungeon for a second time to save the one
whom he loved. Everyone is ashamed of him just because
he stood up for what he believed in, and he proved
them wrong. He proved them wrong when he came up from
the dungeon, and didn't get eaten by the rats. He
stood up for himself when he didn't deny his sins,
because he knew in his heart he loved the Princess
Pea.
If you like stories with lots of flavors, then you
would love this book! The book has romance, adventure,
and sadness all t once!! On a scale from 1-10, I would
give this book a 10 for a great story with a great
plot. I highly recommend this book!!

Entertaining for me & my six year old is in love with Despereaux

I would agree that this book leaves a little to be desired for the working class poor, as a previous reviewer stated, if I did not see the tremendous reaction that the situations of the poorest people (and animals) produced in my own child--it became increasingly clear that I could trust in the common human response the writer had prepared a younger reader for. This novel is very concerned, on the contrary, with developing compassion and even introduces "empathy" as a term for young readers, and explains it very well in young reader terms. Beyond that, the idea of forgiveness is paramount and the main solution of the story--even forgiveness beyond what many might imagine, even if they think the ending will be predictable...it just may not be.

For those who are not Christian-oriented, it is a satisfying tale that hinges well on fairy tale and the morality of a fairy tale, with some of those necessary dark moments in the dungeon--and yet it does not become a classic old-world Grimm fairy tale in that its ending is very evolved and simple. There is enough to scare young readers and keep them entirely hanging on tenterhooks--but not too much fearfulness for too long. Each scary part is long enough to make a meaningful impace, but short enough for a solution or at least a place of some solid reassurance to be in quick reach before storytime is over for the night.

As for other complaints I have read here among the reviews: the book is, perhaps, too simple for an adult reader, but is perfect for a child. Thus the Newberry award medal and NOT the Pulitzer Prize(
