A MUST FOR PROS, AMATEURS MAY WANT TO RECONSIDER

Pelz 400 page opus on golf shots from 100 yards and in (sans putting) is a must for golfers with the time and desire to work at getting to scratch or better. but everyone else might actually want to steer clear of this book. the reason is that if you don't have the considerable time and effort to devote to making the changes that pelz lays out then you could actually end up worse as a player due the resulting information overload.

the main things i took away from the book are:

- the short game is the key to shooting lower scores (but we've heard that before); - try as best you can to let your bigger muscles control short game shots (i.e. keep your hands out of it); - always use an aiming device when you practise; - spend an equal amount of time practising your short game as your long game (i.e. full swing) and if you have to make a sacrifice make it long game; - don't make the mistake of thinking that mindlessly hitting balls is practising; real practise is performing drills.

the one thing i think pelz should have definitely included in the book was a detailed table of contents or appendix. since the book is so large and set up to be referenced many times for specific items (e.g. proper grip) it would be nice to know exactly where in the book the specific item you are looking for is covered. the existing table of contents is virtually useless in this regard.

Very well written, but not always practical

I was expecting this book to be really dry and boring, but was pleasantly surprised. I found it really interesting and liked the occasional comments and stories about professional golfers that Dave Pelz has worked with. Obviously, this book will appeal to someone with more of an analytical viewpoint. If you are simply interested in a how-to guide that will allow you to improve your game overnight, this probably isn't the book for you. I was interested in understanding how things worked, so this book was fascinating to me.

Has this book helped my game? Yes and no. I already believed that my short game was the key to scoring better, so a lot of the book made sense to me. I did buy an additional 3 wedges just as the book recommends. I am also using the chipping technique/style outlined in the book with great success. However, I have not come close to following all of the recommendations in the book. Some of them will be hard because I don't have access to an area where I can accurately measure yardage with my wedges. That's the only downside to the book. Some of the techniques are beyond the average golfer, or require more time and resources than is practical. That's probably not the books fault though.

For me, this book is a long term guide. It is thorough enough to help the really low handicappers in nauseating detail. For now, I can only take advantage of some of the recommendations. As I get better over the years, I expect to keep going back to the book to find new ways to lower my score.

Self help books that work and show results right away.

This book is well laid out with easy to follow the instructions. It uses items that most golfers have and you can get started quickly seeing results the next time you play. You can be as good as you decide by following the excellent drills and by doing the suggested practice. Dave has tought some of the worlds best short game players and his system is well doucemented. A nice feature is you can go as far as you decide in the improvement of your short game.

Dave Pelz short game bible

Dave I am writing to offer a few comments. Recently I purchased your Short game Bible and I proceeded to devour the material as well as practicing the info involved. I have already taken the short game handicap test three straight weeks and I intend to do this once a week from here on in. July 5th I shot a 77. Four days later I shot 73. Three days later I posted a par 72. I only used 11 putts on the front nine. I had seven putts within the four foot range. I am 69 years old, in excellent health and I will shoot my age before Christmas. Count on it! See you later, Dave! Cheers, Tom P.S. My short game handicapo right now is 7. Real soon it will be alot lower than this.
