Secret worlds and hidden treasures
Growing up in Northern California in the l950s, I thought the redwoods would always be there. Not true. Logged almost to extinction, I thought virtually none remained living except in the tiny, microscopic parks. I thought all of the truly big ones had been killed, sacrifices to picnic tables and beach homes. This book proves there are still some left, some of the most ancient and secret living things, hidden in virtually inaccessible places, even though their sanctuary is within these minute protected areas. This book shares a glimpse of their secrets, the heretofore unknown entire worlds and gardens in their canopies, explored for the first time by these few extraordinary humans, who guard their locations zealously. The book arouses mixed feelings in me; joy in discovering there are still some of their ancient beings still standing, although I will never see them, and fear that the sheer fascination with them the book creates so well will lead to their destruction. Indiscriminate logging has led to near extinction, I pray this incredible book doesn't lead to the completion of the death march. But everyone who has ever loved the ancient, the glorious, and the magnificent life on earth needs to read this book.

A Great True Story
This book captures a truest sense of the reality of a special fragment of our natural world, that once dominated western Calforina...and that now seems in retreat, not only there, but all over the planet. Preston takes us into this extraordinary realm by means of those few men and women, who had the boldness and
passion
to persue the awe that, anyone who has seen a Coast Redwood, has experienced. He gets to know them, and the development of their special comraderie, up close and personally. He tells their
story with
clarity, honesty, and understanding....as Preston, the author himself, in an unexpected twist, slowly evolves into those he writes about.
This is a recent story...a story that takes readers skywalking 350 feet above the ground on the branches of 3,000 year old mega-giant
trees
. That this persuit is not for everyone, is clear from the beginning....for it's quite dangerous. The real world protagonists often display tremendous bravery, persistance, inquisitivenss, and a special passion, as they go about their personal developmental processes, of the young people they are.
The book also, through illustration and decription sprays the scientific information, it seems to me, in just the right proportion, and at the appropriate times. It is a page-turner for those readers with an interst in the subject to begin with, and I suspect for those who have little knowlege of experience on such matters...for Preston knows how to tell a good story. The book is well written.
The author takes things from first sources for he understands that the passion for the trees always drives the actions of, what become his friends. Even as they grow in knowledge, their work is far more than academic. Their passion comsumes, and then becomes, their lives. The author has the literary widsom to let the story unfold naturally, and as it just recently occurred.
Preston's informative and searching narrative takes the reader right there with the discoverers.....and is able to share their exhiliration, findings, and insight into a most extraordinary fragment of our natural world.

Preston Gifts Us Another....
......super, super book. One and a half sittings to absolutely consume this work. A most involving, interesting and educational work on an unknown world and its early explorers. Who knew, I thought, who knew that people climbed, explored and camped in Redwoods, Douglas Firs and giant Australian Eucalyptus? Wonderfully fascinating material and eccentric explorers. Do not miss this book.
Fascinating story about the search for the world's largest trees and the art of climbing them
Everybody interested in giant
trees
, especially Redwoods, should read this masterpiece. I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended!
