I very much enjoyed the information in the book as well as the book itself. I have read Gavin's work and though sometimes a bit scary I loved it for the incite. What Tom Patire does different is assembles all the common safe tips and eliminates the myths and adds the truths. This book has it all and if you read it as the answer all to safety it can inspire you but if you read it because you're paranoid then it would be overwhelming.
So if you are a parent, teenager, grandparent or just someone looking for a safer way this book can and will point you in the right direction. It is not a self defense book with aggressive techniques that will usually do the reader more harm then good. It does talk truthfully about self defense and martial arts and even though Tom Patire is a Black Belt, and you can see he loves the discipline of the martial arts, he does a fair evaluation of why people don't take martial arts on a regular basis.
All in all I love the kids sections and the description of different mindsets. With all the piles of dung out there in regards to safety I must commend Patire for a book that is very well done for everyday people.
We all know books that try to educate usually are dry and uneventful to read. Not this one! The author, Tom Patire, intrigues the reader and gets all the safety juices flowing. He covers everything from personal safety, to child safety, to home invasion to (my favorite part) burglarproofing your behavior.
Their are many other things in the book and very well placed like Tom's Tips and safety checklists. I live in Waldwick New Jersey and since the Carlie abduction in Florida everyone in my daughter's school is concerned with safety. I must admit that safety was not always in my thoughts but that Florida event has made me really look into what is out there to protect my child and myself.
I did order another book in regards to safety but I actually through it out because it was gory. The Personal Protection Handbook is enlightening and makes you feel empowered and it is the go to book when you need to look up a safer way. There is allot of material in Tom Patire's book and is something that you would want to read several times in order to digest the entire concept but it is a very interesting book that has many fascinating stories to keep the reader interested.
Hopefully our school district will get more interest in safety of our children but in the meantime it is ever parent's job to protect their kids as well as themselves and I feel this book really educates you in a positive mindset on how to do it and do it right!
The book is extensive in very understandable, useable information. It breaks down safety in a way that people can comprehend and put to use immediately. In the book Tom Patire speaks from his experience as a bodyguard, his love being a father and his seasoning being a skilled person. And yet through all this his live of his life and child echoes throughout the pages of the book.
That is what sold me on him, his programs and his expertise. I am so glad he wasn't an ex-cop that frightens you into avoiding learning about safety. I have been to those seminars only to walk out scared and frustrated. Tom goes against the grain in the book and then brings his reasoning on why. His reasoning is sound, viable, and very convincing and then later on in the books proves his point.
I have a 5, 7, and 9 year old and found the child tips to be priceless especially since know I am a single mother. So ladies if you are like me and you are looking for a good book to aid you in safety, Tom Patire's book is the ideal starting place.
Overall the book is a 10-plus and the valuable of the material is worth far more than words can describe.
Yes I was one of those people and now I am not. That is why I bought Tom Patire's book. I actually met him in an elevator at CBS after he appeared on the Ali and Jack Show. I told him I enjoyed his segment and then I decided to pick his brain.
Not only was he knowledgeable but he was passionate about his beliefs. He took the time to show me and my wife different things to teach our children and not only did he show us he made us try them so we would get them right. Before you knew it the entire group was following Tom learning his obstacle grabs from his KNOW AND GO Child Safety Program.
When I got home I ordered several of his books for me, my family and some of my closest friends. On Saturday night we get together at a select friends home and watch a movie. This Saturday night we spend time discussion Tom's book and going over some of the things he taught me.
I could not believe the energy and concern that came from that room. Tom showed us a way and we followed and now I and hopefully others have began the pursuit to a safer life for the people we love. The book is excellent by all counts but it is only a starting place. We need to take these safety courses so we can share with our children the priceless knowledge of how to be safe in a world that has the wrong element luring and preying on the weak.
The child section in the book was great and the safety checklists are the best but the stories that link it all together are what make the book flow together in a masterful yet entertaining way.
The headlines and the news clips made me think but The Personal Protection Handbook gave me hope and a place to educate myself on how to live life in safety.
Fantastic book by a very down-to-earth author.
After reading the article I bought his book. First I must say he turned out to be a very handsome man and I could not get over his stature. When I knew him he was 5' 5" and now he stands 6' 3" solid. Anyway back to the book. I also am a mother of twins and my girls are 10 years old now. I try to teach them as much about safety as I can but I don't really know more than the average person.
What Tom's book did for me was give me an abundance of key tips and checklists to choose from. See to me Tom's point of his book is here is the information, if it can help you, then please use it. He covers many different topics and what he really did for me personally is stimulate my subconscious to be more safety conscious by making safety easy for me to understand. Everything I do in life is for my family so I want them, as well as I, to be around for a long time, so I now have made safety a part of my life!
My husband Robert read Tom's book and said that this guy knows his stuff and loved the stories inside the book that makes the book really interesting. Coming from my husband, a career Marine, that is a compliment because he doesn't think any of these books are worth the time or the money.
The book covers everything including what not to say to bad guys, how to handle a bad guest, what to do if your child is lost in a mall or amusement and it even gives a overview of martial arts, self defense and personal protection. We always use to joke to Tom because he was so into martial arts that he needed martial arts because he was so small. But after seeing what he has accomplished, the people he protects and the organizations he teaches for, I must say we are all eating our words.
Throughout the book you get the feeling that Tom is on a mission and that mission is to make a difference, and knowing him, he sure will. See I went to school with him since 6th grade and he always was the underdog but he never, ever gave up. He would be the first one on the playground and the last to leave. I remember seeing him throwing the ball against Roosevelt school wall for hours. His book relays his message of "If I can - You can" but as many said before me it "empowers" the reader in a very positive, SAFE way.
So to sum it if you don't read books for yourself then make an exception and read this one for the people you care about. After all what Tom Patire says is very true "Safety is in your hands!"
