You won't ever forget this.....

This book is so sad - heart-wrenching at times. How is it humanly possible to despise a person you have never met before (Dave's mother) and to care so deeply for a child that you have never met either (Dave)? The minute you pick up the book you bond with the boy in this story. This story is about a boy's will to live...and it proves that there are so many obstacles we can overcome if we truly set our mind to it, and don't let our spirit get broken. Turn obstacles into blocks..building blocks.
This is a story about one of the cruelest, most inhumane women who has ever lived, and the torture she imposed upon this young boy during his childhood. Forced to drink ammonia, go days without food, and face daily beatings, Dave Pelzer defeated his mother in the end. It is so hard to believe that there are people so cruel in this world...and even worse then that, there are people who choose to "look the other way".
Although the subject matter of this book make it difficult to endure, I think every one needs to read this book...if you learn anything from it, maybe you will learn the signs of abuse....which could save a life.

An intense read!

They call this one of the most severe child abuse cases in
California's history. The severe abuse is what Dave Pelzer, the
author of A Child Called "It" , endured everyday of his life for about
seven years during the late 60's and early 70's. His mother, in a
drunken stupor and depressed, starved him, beat him, and even stabbed
him with a knife. This all happened while his father stood by and
neglected to do anything about it. Dave went from believing there was
no God and wanting to die, to learning to play his mother's "games" in
order to survive. Visit Dave's personal triumph over abuse at the
hands of his own parents.

When I first picked up the book I didn't know if I would be able to
get through it, but once I started I couldn't put it down. I marveled
at the extent of abuse that this child had lived through. The lurid
details were sometimes so horrifying that I almost forgot this is a
true story and not something out of a horror book. I found the abuse
revolting and at the same time I felt infuriated that this could ever
happen to a child. I thought it was a great book and that it was
superbly written. It is as though it was written by the child during
his time of abuse. The book opened my eyes to what a lot of children
are going through in this country. People need to step in before the
abuse goes too far. I was inspired by Dave Pelzer by what he wrote in
the epilogue:

"I'm so lucky. My dark past is behind me now. As bad as it was, I
knew even back then, in the final analysis, my way of life would be up
to me. I made a promise to myself that if I came out of my situation
alive, I had to make something of myself. I would be the best person
that I could be. Today I am. I made sure I let go of my past,
accepting the fact that that part of my life was only a small fraction
of my life. I knew the black hole was out there, waiting to suck me
in and forever control my destiny--but only if I let it. I took
positive control over my life. I'm so blessed."

Anyone reading A Child Called "It" would need to be mature enough to
emotionally handle the severe abuse talked about in this book. I
would recommend this book to doctors, nurses, social workers, school
staff or anyone that works directly with children. The more who read
this book, the more aware they can be concerning child abuse and the
signs associated with it. I am looking forward to buying the other
two books in this trilogy, The Lost Boy and A Man Named Dave, to find
out how he overcame such obstacles.

A Must Read for anyone dealing with child abuse

Depressing, horrifying, and educational all at the same time. Anyone who deals with children should read this book.

A must read for educators

This book is wonderful. I think it should be required for ALL Teachers working with ages 0months to 13 years old. It opened up my eyes to lot of things. Of course these things happened years ago. But still it showed me how to be a better listener when children say things. As teacher/director of a daycare center children have lots of issues that they bring to school. Some times its the only place they have to vent. As a matter of fact I have my 12 year old reading it. So teachers please take the time to listen what you little ones are saying. It may save thier life one day!
