Great read!

Excellent book! It has profound applications not only in the business world, but also personally.

Brilliant!

This book uses the format of a simple story to profoundly introduce concepts that will change the world. The concepts stand in contrast to the model of debate that describes the current state of business and leadership culture, which follows a militaristic theme. People fight for their ideas and defend their position. In the end, there must be a winner and a loser declared. People must be convinced or even manipulated. That model is taught in school and used in business and life everywhere. The problem is that there's no real collaboration and people only pretend to be on the same side, or won't even attempt to look at the other side of a particular issue. The more emotionally charged the issue, the less likely anyone will be convinced.

L&SD suggests that the first step in leadership is to see the humanity in people, to see their sameness, to see people as people. The reason is that people don't just react to what you say, but to how they sense you feel about them. When we can't see people's humanity and they are just an object we need to deal with or workaround or convince, we are said to be "in the box" and L&SD describes some ways we get "in the box" and how we can get out. When we see people's humanity, there's a connection that can be felt. They feel understood and become more receptive to our leadership.

If this sounds too soft for your tastes, know that one does not need to be "nice" as a result. Any leadership style will be more effective once the leader sees the humanity in people and people feel understood.

This book helps people who always think everyone else is the problem, see that they are most often the problem, especially if they think everyone else is the problem.
Good read. Useful for businesses and individuals as well.

4.5 really - Awesome intuitive book

This is finally a NEW idea when it comes to leadership. I have read so many books on business, management, leadership, even biographies, some very good, some excellent, but always looking for a new idea, new perspective, a way that has not been explained before. The idea of self-deception is supremely simple and extremely complicated at the same time. It's a great read, and the story-like reading style helps move it along at a very good pace. Highly recommend this.
