Enjoyable, quick read

Once I started the book, I could not put it down. I enjoyed the lessons in the book about diversity and purpose in life. I was really hoping to see how the author's brain tumor was resolved, but the author left me hanging. The ending was quite abrupt, considering that the author spent a great deal of time covering details in the book. I could not see how some of the childhood memories tied into the story.

As a Starbucks fan myself, it was quite interesting hearing the perspective of a Starbucks barista. In my next visit to Starbucks I will carefully observe the baristas to see how close Mike's descriptions come to reality.

Stumbling, Bumbling Buddha Discovers Enlightenment behind Counter

I gave this book a five star rating, because it has the word "star" in its title. That's a good enough reason, isn't it? The author was broke prior to his employment with Starbucks, so he took a job because he needed to earn some "bucks". We begin our story with a guy who is befuddled and clueless about his tattered life. We end our story with the same guy now old and improved! He has found joy, purpose, and meaning in his life! KAPOW! Take that you joyless, purposeless, meaningless yous! Now I'm not going to complain about my life (if I do, God will just give me something to really complain about); however, reading this book made me feel like working at Starbucks. Thar be enlightenment! Being that I don't drink coffee and can't pronounce anything else they serve, I'll just stay put. I'll add that Crystal nearly stole the show. Crystal's respect betters Tawana's rage in the dialog, "I know my job, Tawana". I plan to read this book again. There is more than one lesson to be gained. But Michael Gates Gill, what happened with that wacky tumor?

My new years day surprise

Well, it's Jan. 1, 2008 and I spent the better part of the whole day reading this book. I didn't mean too, but once I started, I couldn't put the book down. No, it's not the great american novel or even the great american biography, but it is a good book that I think I needed to read on this day, a new year with a new realization on what I'm am truly blessed to have; my family and my happiness. Mr. Gill, in his 60's finally got what the true meaning of life was and it wasn't some big corporate job with status. While I wish so many of his mistakes didn't hurt others, I am glad that he owned up to his mistakes and tried to make things right. So many people do not do this in life and their mistakes continue to hurt because they refused to take responsibility for the pain that they have caused. I am glad that Starbucks does have a great respect for their partners or else we may have never heard this wonderful story. Mr. Gill, I loved your story, I hope you don't forget the lessons learned of the past few years because of the success of this book. Keep your heart planted on what's really important. And to Crystal, the lady that gave him a second chance, I will try to be a blessing to someone as often as possible, because you don't know whose life you may be saving.

If you have peace in your life you will love this book

What a great reminder to all of us regardless of economic class or race, we are all guilty of looking down our noses. I think it's great Mike has the guts and courage to admit the truth. I LOVE THIS BOOK. Definitely makes me feel better about Starbucks and I'm definitely glad to hear they are offering their employees respect, opportunity and health insurance.
