Best Basic Cookbook

I have over a thousand cookbooks. I am a pretty accomplished cook with some professional experience. My wife on the other hand is potentially a great cook who is just getting acquainted with the kitchen. We both agree that this is our favorite basic cookbook. I highly recommend this book as a basic reference for any one learning how to cook. As a well experienced cook I can vouch for the quality of the recipes as tested by America's Test Kitchen. If you had to buy only one cookbook this would be the one.

This cookbook is filled with tons of pictures (1,500 according to the book), which I find helpful to know what the finished product should look like.
The book reviews food products, and tells you what is voted most popular, flavorful, and desired by the american population.
A wonderful book to give as a gift. Lots of easy and tasty recipes for the entire family. You'll find it will influence what you choose to purchase at the grocery store. I always knew Hellman's mayonnaise was the best!

Like many of the Best Recipe and America's Test Kitchen titles, this book gives you both the art and science of how its recipes work. What happens if you cook it a little hotter or cooler, or add more or less of a particular ingredient. The book gives these details, and importantly gives the results for these variations so that you can concoct your own personal Best.

I also particularly like that this volume is ring bound. It lays flat for easy kitchen consults, or you can pull a page out and either make a quick copy or bring it along for reference at the market.

An outstanding purchase for families in a hurry!

Clear and precise information and some amazing information for substituting one type of vegetable, oil or meat for another to allow for individual tastes and requirements.

Highly recommend this book and the price is unbeatable!

A kitchen staple

Even though I consider myself a good cook, I was amazed at the new cooking techniques I learned with this cookbook. It all started when my 16-year-old son received this as a Christmas gift two years ago. The book has sat on the counter since then and it is probably used at least 2-3 times per week. My entire family now has this cookbook. I even gave one to a new bride/groom and they were not cooks at all. They really like the basics of this cookbook. I don't need fancy. I want the basic meals to turn out the best they can. I love that it explains why you use certain techniques. Absolutely a must in every kitchen.
