Great book!

This book is great for first time parents who know absolutely nothing about the whole pregnancy process, from start to after the finish. It's written with a blend of clinical and down to earth information and advice which makes it very easy to read. I took this book out from the library when I first learned I was pregnant (along with about 20 others), and this is the one book I chose to buy. It has been invaluable to me and my husband!

Knowledge is Power....Well worth the money!

The Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy was extremely useful for my first time pregnancy in 2006. I referred to this book every month and sometimes each week, reading about my changing body, and learning about each change my baby was going through. Any mother going through pregnancy for the first time (or more) needs to have some sort of medical reference at home. I love that it is easy to read and very easy to look up information in a flash. Sometimes I had more questions after I left my doctors office and this book helped answer a lot of those questions so I didn't have to call my doctor back right away. Overall, this is an excellent book to have on hand for any father or mother-to-be! To this day, this is one of my favorite reference books on pregnancy!!

This is the best book - an example

There are a lot of reviews telling you to buy this book in addition to the "What to expect" book. If you're only going to buy one, buy this. If two, go ahead and buy the the "What to Expect" book. Mayo's book is more clearly written, more technical, and less condescending than the other book. More important for me (the doting husband), this book builds confidence and gives clear information, while "Expecting" often just makes her nervous and afraid. One example, when selecting a doctor, "Expecting" lists 'good, better, and best' general practitioners, ob/gyn's, and the prenatal specialists, in that order. Given that, we figured we should go for the best - it's our baby, after all. After reading the Mayo chapter on the same topic, it is very clear that if you don't need a prenatal specialist (i.e., high risk pregancy, complications, etc.) you are better off with an ob/gyn - you'll get more attention, you'll have more input in the delivery, etc. Regardless of the additional expense.

My wife reads this one first, then goes to the "expecting" chapter, and comes back to this for assurance...

Hands down the best pregnancy book out there

This is BY FAR the best pregnancy book in my library. Not only is it published by one of the most well respected medical establishments in the United States, it is fascinating to read and contains everything you need to know or want to know about your pregnancy. The week by week descriptions of fetal development are wonderful and stick only to medical fact. The charts about when to call your practioner are great too. This book is not sprinkled with opinion by some corny author, but gives one medical facts on both sides of the coin so that one can come to their own conlusions about things such as circumcision, breastfeeding, and so on. If you buy only one book, buy this one. "What to Expect While you are Expecting" is pretty much useless, except for those nights that you're awake and have nothing else to read. Not even a Target flyer.

Informative Book

I purchased this book when I was about 2 months pregnant. It has been a useful, straightforward, unbiased, and thorough reference so far. It is easily organized and has a good index.
