I Love LA. I loved this Book.

Los Angeles is my home and reading about LA from James Frey's perspective was a treat indeed. I love the way he writes, and am a big fan of his other two books. The fun facts about Los Angeles were like toppings on a wonderful dessert. This is an excellent read. I couldn't put it down. My heart ached for Dylan and Maddie and I openly cried for their joys and pain. Generally I am not a sappy person, but the way Frey fleshes out his characters make them as real as my own family and friends. Though there is a disclaimer in the front of the book, I found that ironic since there was sooooooooo much truth (I live near the 14 and Magic Mountain Parkway). Having still not recovered by the injustice of the Oprah debacle, I would say to buy this book, buy all Frey's books. They are delicious.

I live in L.A. This book is miraculous.

I moved to L.A. at 21 and feel like I've stepped into the pages of something alive, real, and transcendent. Frey's "Bright Shiny Morning" typifies the complex, beautiful, and horrific place L.A. can be. Not only does he personify this city of slums and estates, soccer moms and super-agents; he introduces us to people who are not soon forgotten.

This book takes immense chances with the English language, pushing it just like William Faulkner did. I could care less what people say about his previous novel being a lie because he called it a memoir. Great writing is great writing. End of story.

One of the most interesting and original books I've read in a very long time

James Frey has got the gift of the written word. I loved the style it was written in. Very unique and interesting. I couldn't put the book down. I felt like I was a resident of L.A., and I should be careful where I went and who I hooked up with.James put his money where someone elses big mouth was! If your looking for a good summer read I recomend this book.

bright shiny read

this was a page turner that i couldn't put down. i got used to the run-on, non-punctuated sentence structure pretty quickly and it added to the style of writing. it's impossible not to get attached to the main characters - love them, pity them, hate them too. but you want to keep reading - you want to know what happens. i started to slow my reading down because i didn't want it to end. the additional information about l.a. that broke up the stories was a nice addition. i am having a hard time reading another book; this was great!!

A Grand Slam Homer

The LA Times hated and the NY Times loved it. The NY Times said "The million little pieces guy was called James Frey. He got a second act. He got another chance. Look what he did with it. He stepped up to the plate and hit one out of the park. No more lying, no more melodrama, still run-on sentences still funny punctuation but so what. He became a furiously good storyteller this time."

Well I can tell you the NY Times was right. This book was a grand slam homer. Frey's book is brilliant and compelling. His style is unique and unorthodox but in a good way. A great way. I will be buying his first 2 books and I know I will be rereading Bright Shiny Morning.
