Amazing book...

I was blown away by this spare little book. I wasn't sure what to expect because I haven't seen the film yet. I had heard McCarthy's books were tough and unpleasant, and I was expecting this one to be a downer. However, I found the book to be almost poetic at times in spite of the subject matter. I read it very quickly because I wanted to find out what happened. I am now reading "The Road" by the same author. His style is very stark; he uses few words but gets a lot of meaning out of them. I think he's a great writer. Give him a try; I don't think you will be disappointed. I look forward to reading more of his work.

Great Read!

I read this book after seeing the movie. I was afraid I would be disappointed and was as enraptured with the novel as I had been with the movie. I highly recommend No Country for Old Men. The writing was simple but strong. It leaves you with that lingering feeling of being a part of something words cannot describe. I could not wait to finish the book and hated to come to the end of the book. Savor the flavor that Cormac McCarthy creates in this wonderful modern western story.

Incredible

I could not put this book down. It was hard to keep the dialouge straight from time to time but other than that this book is perfect.

Arguably the Greatest Living American Writer

Anyone who says the violence in this novel is pointless or gratuitous missed the boat. Unless you read it completely literally and neglect any of the larger issues being addressed, but where's the fun in that? Wonderful, subtle reference to "Mammon" near the end that ties it all together thematically, provides a large clue as to McCarthy's intent with this work, in case you hadn't yet made up your mind. Another masterpiece from one of America's greatest living writers.

And those that continue to bemoan McCarthy's lack of grammar skill...uh, he's doing it on purpose, with good reason.

Maybe think a bit, consider why a writer would choose to use that style, what it contributes to the whole, considering the subject matter and themes of the novel, before you subject the rest of us to "My 5th grader uses better grammar" ad nauseum.

fast-paced and bloody story with excellent narration

I am a huge fan of Cormac McCarthy and I was intrigued by the reviews that stated this was one of his most accessible works ever, and also by the current movie adaptation by the Coen brothers (which I have not yet seen). I enjoyed this audiobook for its fast-moving descriptions of brutal action and for the fully developed characters. I felt the ending was anticlimactic though. Kudos for the narration which fully captured the rough 'n tumble feel of the book.
