The best book I have ever read
I have been a voracious reader all my life, and an amateur lover of science to boot. I picked up this book not really knowing what to expect, but was hoping for a smart person's guide to science. What I got was the single best book I have ever read. Filled with charming anecdotes and incredibly helpful expositions of otherwise maddeningly complex topics, I've read it 8 times now and it just doesn't stop being wonderful. I took the book on vacation with my mom when we traveled through Europe together, and found myself interrupting her reading every half hour or so with snippets of wonderfully told stories that I couldn't even finish telling before erupting into giggles and needing to take a breath and wipe away the tears in order to complete the paragraph.
If this book had come out when I was in middle school instead of when I was in law school, I am positive I would have been a scientist instead of an attorney. This is the kind of book I had hoped to find all my life - engaging, intelligently written, chock full of impressively articulated complexities and the kind of book that fosters a true appreciation (even admiration) for the world around you.
He breaks the book into discrete units, discussing
everything
from the
history
of taxonomy and the evolution of the taxonomic system, to the geological movement of the continents and different theories associated with it, to the most pressing and complex problems in particle physics. It is the ultimate smart person's guide to science - painstakingly researched and engagingly, hysterically funny. Give this book to precocious youngsters and you will change their lives. It's not so complex that normal people won't understand and enjoy it, but not so easy that people with a background in science won't learn something new.
Do yourself a favor and buy this book. You won't regret it.

Entertaining Overview of "Nearly Everything"
"A
Short
History
of
Nearly
Everything
" is an entertaining overview of life and science, positioned and written well for a general audience. Bill Bryson is an entertaining and very good author...he writes quite well and clearly delineates where he knows something and where he does not.
This is a book that is not only entertaining, amusing and informative, but it also offers a channel of information regarding science and life in an accessible manner. While many popular science books start off with basic facts and then dive deep into details, Bryson maintains an even level of abstraction with regards to his subject matter.
Bryson has a gift for laying out a road map for what he intends to accomplish through his writing...and then to accomplish it clearly using well-laid landmarks and guideposts for the reader.
This book should serve to increase general scientific awareness and engage readers in the wonders of science. This is a great book and I highly recommend it to all readers.

A Must Have
Absorbing, easy to understand, and superbly read. I recommend this book to anybody seeking and overall picture of what is, how it got here, and an introduction into some of the notable names of those who've enhanced our understanding of the universe.
History of Nearly Everthing
This book is extremely well done. It is very informative and easy to understand. It certainly pushes the envelope on thinking. When I finished it, I wanted to start over.
Double dose of amazement.
First,I read the (library) book. Was amazed and delighted. Had eye surgery, and listened to the book on tape. Ordered a copy for myself and copies for grandchildren. The best book I've ever, ever encountered. The scope is amazing and wonderful. I'm looking forward to updates from this author as new discoveries are made, meanwhile, I'll pursue some of the topics he has introduced to a granny who went to school before DNA was even discovered!
