I have a college degree and years of experience dealing with people who battle addictions. This is one of the most helpful books I have ever read in terms of finding the root of the problem. This is not a how-to book written by professors and therapists. It is not a book excusing bad behavior, nor is it a book of psychological theories. It is a book of reality and practicality. It is written by women who have been there and found something helpful, women who looked life in the face and took control of themselves and their situations. The authors and editor have done this book as a labor of love. Flylady and Leann are showing what happens when we take the wounds others inflict on us and keep scratching off the scabs ourselves, so to speak. They share real and practical healing. They have found one of the root causes of addiction...a search for love and respect, a search for control over some part of one's life when those who should be loving us don't. Personally, I like being called a flybaby. I like knowing someone loves me even though I'm not perfect...that it's okay not to be perfect. If you've ever listened to Marla speak, you know she really does love people. I was a little dismayed, but more amused, by the jewelrymaker who addressed the profits from the book and the style of writing. Is it a problem that a book is sold for profit? Look at the price, and the fact that it was self-published first (not a real money maker!), and you can tell profit isn't the first motive here. And as was pointed out...these fantastic sales with no big name promotions...that speaks for itself! It was written as a tool for the system, and I don't think it's a problem to promote it just like the other tools the system uses. All "systems" out there have a manual which usually costs an arm and a leg besides the cost of enrolling. Flylady has proven results at no enrollment cost. Bringing attention to a book that costs 8 bucks isn't exactly "self-promoting." As far as style, anyone can use her own style...whatever helps someone (or sells books for that matter!) is acceptable. The style is homey and unique, conversational and honest...and repetitive because we never get on the first or second time 'round. We have to be reminded every day. Part of the "system", if you will. If you're looking for a therapy couch ("poor thing, it's everyone else's fault you're like this and there's nothing you can do so everyone should make exceptions for your poor behavior"), a quick easy fix, and a high price tag, this ain't it. If you're looking for a hug ("Poor thing. Some else was wrong when they hurt you; but stop giving them power over your life and take charge! You ARE loved!"), a plan and a kick in the seat to make you move, bingo, Baby!

I'm FLYing!!

I have been a Flybaby for about a year and in that time have learned Babysteps to a clutter-free home and significantly de-stressed my life and the lives of my family. This book is a natural extension of Flylady's 'system'. She and Leanne share their personal stories and setbacks along their road back to health, as well as the actions they took to achieve this. It is *not* a diet book, nor does it preach "eat this, not that".

What it *does* do, is encourage and support our journey from cluttered bodies to more healthful ones through the same Babysteps we used to declutter the rest of our lives. And it is a great emotional 'closet cleaner', too!!

"Progress, not perfection".

I second the positive reviews!!!!!!

I agree The reviewers that had negative responses maybe don't fully "get" the book...or maybe they don't feel they have a problem with not treating themselves well. This book is emotional - the root of the reason of most of my problems...I needed a "real" book, one with shared stories, one with exercises to get to the root of the matter, and one with steps to take... it's so important that people realize that this isn't a "diet" plan...is a "life" plan...or not even a "plan"...just something to start DOING to start finally FLYing. I have tried everything...and had once again begun to give up on myself...I have read enough books to know what I "should" be eating, or that I "should" be exercising! What I NEEDED were tools to get me started...and help to get over my perfectionism attitude that keeps me chained to the wall almost everyday.
This book was a very easy read - not bogged down by a lot of medical terms, and it's free of the stress of making another list of foods to go buy at the grocery store. I did the Body Clutter missions as I went along the first time through, and I feel a sense of peace that I can't explain. This is definately something that I'm going to refer to often to help me keep my sanity.

Do you feel like something is out of balance but aren't sure what?
Do you feel like you have little energy?
Does it seem like it takes a lot of effort to have to keep up with eating well and being healthy everyday?
Does it seem like it takes a lot of effort to have to keep up with your house chores everyday?
Do you have feelings of guilt in your life?
If you answered "yes" to any of these, FLYlady is for you!

I've been a FLYbaby for a while, thinking a lot about the awesome steps to develop some new habits in my life....but not a lot of doing.
After I finished the book today, I went and took a shower, fixed my hair and face, and got dressed to shoes. Then I went to my kitchen and shined my sink. then I put away the clean dishes and loaded up the dishwasher.
I felt so empowered! I went grocery shopping, and came home and felt my self-power to keep moving! I'm actually excited for tomorrow, even though it's Monday and that means that I have to go to work.

Thank you FLYlady, Leanne, and Kelly!

Body Clutter: Cleaning out my thinking :)

I started reading this book to loose weight. Since reading and thinking about all of the information in this book, I have lost almost 30 pounds, changed the way I dress, and have decluttered two rooms in my house. My mother has also lost weight because of our change in eating habits.

I would reccomend this book to anybody that doesn't want to diet, but to make changes in how you Love yourself and how you want to live.

- A FlyBaby in VA

THIS BOOK HELPED ME FIGURE OUT THE WHY ...

We all know that statistically we are becoming a nation that is mainly obese, and this is despite the fact that we have the most access to books ,fitness videos and the latest gizmo to help you have the "washboard abs you've always dreamed of" . I have been a FLYBABY for a little over a year since I read Sink Reflections by Marla it was like a huge light bulb went on and I finally got why I had clutter in my home. Then the journey continued with dealing with my "Body Clutter". I was a bit skeptical at first as most of us were to the idea that Shining our sinks would make a difference in a house that looked like a tornado hit it from inside, but it did work and so does Body Clutter when you are ready to do the work and apply it. As a veteran with training in physical fitness readiness in the military and having purchased just about every "latest dieting book" was not enough to help me with with dealing with my excess body clutter , because all the pushups in the world won't help if you don't get down to the root of the why we overeat , or don't move enough and the answer is quite simple :
Finally Loving Yourself enough to WANT to change .

To those reviewers who have shared their critism of the book I say you are entitled to your opinion but please stop insisting that Marla or Leanne are making nutritional claims, or are an end all be all to diet books , which they don't .Body Clutter is NOT A DIETING BOOK!! it's so much more . If you haven't been living under a rock the past few years you know what to do and what to eat based on your individual needs since we are constantly being reminded in latest news reports and health articles.
We all know that we need to eat less, move more but it's the why we Chose not to do it that's important. I thank God that I was led to the FLYLADY site. I hope that you will invest the 8 bucks and see what a REAL difference FLYING can make!!!
