Strength within

Initially I thought this was just an average book with interesting observations, but as I read on, the characters and their stories grew so alive and intimate that I felt as if I really had been on their journeys. I have read many books with the similar themes and premises, and have been disappointed. But in this book, the insight into the perils in a young woman's life and the inner strength and determinations for her survival is written in a very cerebral, controlled way, void of emotional manipulation. Joyce Carol Oates is just amazing.

Missing an Ending

This was an excellent novel with the exception that it has no real ending. It just runs out of steam and then uses a very flimsy device to wrap certain elements up. I loved the very 19th century Dickensian way Ms. Oates throws every imaginable peril at her main character but, unlike something from that century, there is no remarkable, breath-taking end.

Gravedigger's Daughter - Unforgettable

A grim yet compelling tale of the heartbreaking struggle of an immigrant's daughter. Beautifully told by a modern master, Oates' characters and descriptions are seering and unforgettable.

Loved MOST of the book, but hoped for more...

I enjoyed this book for the majority of my read, but I was a bit disappointed toward the end. The first ¾ of the book focuses on Rebecca and her life from her own point of view, but later in the novel, other characters are introduced and Oates weaves you in and out of the lives of other characters (Rebecca's son, husband, etc.). This happens many times, paragraph by paragraph, so it is hard to know which character you are reading about. I assume this is the writer's style and possibly is a reflection of the characters having overlapping perspectives, but I personally wanted to stay with Rebecca for the duration of the novel - see the world from her eyes. You get so connected to her, it is hard when towards the end she almost disappears and other characters take center stage and then with time, everyone fades and there is nothing left to grasp onto. A unique read written by a talented writer, but it left me wanting more of Rebecca with a more traditional ending.
