Books for the next generation

I was delighted to see this adorable book offered on Amazon because I have been building a library for my grandchildren. I recalled reading "Never Teast a Weasel" to my own children 40 years ago, so I ordered it for my 43-year-old daughter to introduce to her 2-1/2-year-old twins. (I hope she uses the same dramatic inflection I did!) She was thrilled to remember it.

Perfect for learning to read

I am an avid reader and have been since my earliest years. For me and my children, the bedtime story is a cemented ritual that is never missed. It was this way for me as a child, as well, and by the age of four I had taught myself to read - mainly through memorization. I made my mother read the same two or three books over and over, and from there, I learned to recognize words and fit them into other books. "Never Tease a Weasel" was the book I read first on my own. My mother probably still remembers key phrases from this book - I know I've never forgotten the kitten's mittens and the moose's juice.

I have five kids, and when the older three were very small, I read to them from the battered copy my mom had saved from my childhood. Sadly, that copy has since been lost. Although I will miss the original (though somewhat outdated) illustrations, I am absolutely thrilled to see a new version of this timeless rhyming classic back in print. My hope is that my two younger children will derive as much pleasure as I and their older siblings did. Maybe one of them will teach themselves to read with this meaningful but fun little story.

Delightful drawings, short on storyline

My small children enjoyed the predictability of the text, and giggled at the illustrations which are charming. But even my 7 year old looked bemused as he realised that we'd hit the last page: the story just doesn't go anywhere. If I were considering buying the book today, I'd look it up in my local library first.

Adds new drawings by New Yorker cartoonist George Booth for a totally new look.

Jean Conder Soule's NEVER TEASE A WEASEL receives George Booth's drawings as it tells of how to resist teasing a weasel. There's lots of other things to do to be kind to animals - like knitting kittens mittens, giving a moose some juice, or more. If this sounds familiar - it's because this reissues a classic 1964 picture book - but adds new drawings by New Yorker cartoonist George Booth for a totally new look.

fun story

As a child, I had the original. The story is clever and fun for children. I did like the artwork in the original much better but at least it is still available in print. All kids will love this story!
