Captivating and sad to read

My fourth Rule book and I'm definitely a fan while still new to this genre. The last one I read, the Capano murderer was a bit long in back story, this one was just about right. I enjoy knowing a bit about the background of the characters, but not necessarily everything, I think this book had the right balance.

While I'd still recommend the Bundy story first, to any new to Rule's work, this is a close second. This story has about everything; murder, suicide, molestation, adultery, murder for hire, seduction, lies, arson, cops, robbers and biker gangs. Maybe that makes people that want to read about this kind of stuff kinda of creepy, but I don't know, it's so interesting, trying to figure out why people can fall so low, or how they can give in to some of the impulses they do, it's just interesting and Rule's books read like mystery novels that are almost unbelievable.

One of the more fascinating aspects of this case is how children can be so controlled, so affected, so used and how important it is for children to be raised in loving two parent households. It's interesting to note that Rule, who should know this stuff, should see better than anyone how bad off kids have it when their parents are absent, abusive, etc., is apparently totally critical of Dr. Laura, who has made it a life mission to save children.

Ironic, it seems, that she could see how easily it is for a female child that is without a father to give in to the sexual advances of an abuser, how easy it is for another female child to give in the the evil schemes of her father, and then think that a woman that devotes her life to preaching about how important two parent families are, how important it is to have a strong moral belief system in place for children, how important it is to live up to standards that puts the welfare of children first is somehow a bad person. Makes you think.

I guess my rant here is this, reading Rule's works is indeed pleasurable because she is such a skilled writer and she writes about real crime, real evil, however, if one doesn't take a lesson of some kind away from this, if there isn't something to be gained on the side of good, then the reading is merely whipped cream, and it shouldn't be.

I wish Ann would take back her hurtful and unkind words about Dr. Laura, she above most, should know better.

Great Read

After reading Heart Full of Lies... this was a refreshing novel to read. I thought it was written great and gave great detail through interviews. A great story to keep you reading more and more.

Not a Candidate for Father of the Year

In one of her best works ever, Ann Rule tells the gut-wrenching, tear-jerking tale of a young girl, Cinnamon Brown, whose only mistake in life was the father to which she born; unfortunately, something none of us can control.

David Brown, Cinnamon's father, was the classic textbook definition of a narcissist; yet he was a coward. His self-centered wishes and desires led him to manipulate his young daughter into killing stepmother, Linda Brown.

Following the killing, a young, scared Cinnamon was found curled up in a doghouse attempting to deal with what she had done for her father...in the name of showing him she really did love him.

After being tried and convicted, this cold-hearted father visited his daughter but only to remind her with each visit to stick to her story; to never let them know of his involvement. But, fortunately, Cinnamon matured and, with the help and encouragement of law enforcement officials who realized who was the "real murderer," she was able to free herself of the confinements of prison and her fathers emotional stronghold.

This is an extremely interesting, yet emotionally devestating book. A must read for true crime fans!

An evil mind, devoid of conscience, full of evil to the brim

By: Marisol Cervantes (Real Name)
The story of a man who suffered in his childhood but made anyone he met pay for it, especially young girls, especially his own first daughter at fourteen; anyone who ran into him had to suffer for it. A masterful recount, psichologically deep, and recreation of how complete lack of conscience ravages and defiles everything in his way, treading ruthlessly on innocent lives. Unbelievable as it may seem, this convoluted tale of evil defies any master thriller writer, and Miss Rule creates the ambiance that goes with it, the anguish those girls had to live, many times from their very infancy. I must say, to write this review I cheated a little, saw the end of the afterword (to this morning I've read three fourths of it), of course I'm not telling. Suffice it to say that at this moment I have a lot of translation work to do, and I've been sneaking to this book for a week to see what continues to happen... I'll only say if I were an authority in Orange County, the criminal would certainly be gassed, or hang, or whatever it is they do in California. But I'm not telling if: she?, he? it? hung.
A masterful reconstruction of an evil mind, full of evil, devoid of conscience.

"brainwashing" really is possible

If you like true crime, you really must read "If You Really Loved Me". Ann Rule is one of my favorite authors, not because she writes about gory crimes, but because she delves into the psychological aspect of crime. She has written several excellent books which examine the lives of killers who abuse and victimize their own families. What is the story behind the psychological makeup that drives a human being to become a betrayer, a liar, a con man so self-involved that he could kill those closest to him? "If You Really Loved Me" is about just such a character. Ann Rule did an excellent job describing the contrast between how unattractive David Brown is, short, ugly and pockmarked, with the beauty and youth of the young women he married, then discarded in their early 20s. He was very good at finding young girls (literally girls, in their young teens) from deprived backgrounds who would be impressed with his success and money. He created a world where he was king, he provided everything. Once a girl started to mature, he could no longer hold such control over her every thought, so he had to move on to a fresh, naive victim. If you ever wondered how brainwashing could be possible, this book explains it. This story of family abuse, manipulation and murder is truly fascinating.
