Suspenseful story that doesn't let go until the very end!
One of the blessings of browsing Amazon is coming across unfamiliar authors. I accidentally came upon Massey when I happened upon the anthology "Voices From The
Other Side
: Dark Dreams II (Dark Dreams)," that just happened to have been edited by the author.
Being a long-time fan of Tananarive Due, who has a selection in the collection, I wondered who this Brandon Massey was. If he edited a book featuring one of my favorite authors, then he, too, must have some merit.
Well, I journeyed to the local bookstore and came upon "The Other
Brother
."
What a brilliant piece of storytelling is this book!!!
"The Other Brother" is riveting fiction that grabs you from the start. Set in the author's residence of Atlanta, it draws upon the well-known affluence of certain African-Americans in America's premier "chocolate city."
A stranger enters the family of a prominent Atlanta businessman and begins, little by little, to unravel and destroy the family in his quest for a perceived revenge. The main protagonist, Gabriel, must deal with this "alien," the antagonist named Isaiah Battle; the "love child" of a romantic liaison between the latter's now-deceased mother and the father of them both. With his suspicions growing about the "frere," Gabriel must convince his religious mother Marge, his overprotective father Theo, his younger sister Nicole, and his fiancé Dana that Isaiah has ulterior motives.
Not only that, Isaiah appears to have some psychic powers that enable him to "control" others.
The growing conflict between the two men concludes with a nail-biting confrontation at a north GA cabin in the woods.
Massey's style is reminiscent of the best from the early writings of King, Koontz, and even Due. It is passionate, detailed, and marvelously executed with short chapters filled with superb continuity.
This is indeed a book that would adapt well to the big screen.
Besides, the author already mentions in the book a possible candidate for the role of the "bad guy."
Finally, for those of us familiar with the city of Atlanta, the author makes references to places, people and things IN and OF Atlanta, especially black Atlanta.
I can't remember the last time that I read a book that mentioned The Links or The AU Center!
That is so cool!!!

okay read
This book was just okay for me. It was well written, but there were too many slow spots. It was not a page turner for me.

Can your environment play an important part in shaping peoples lives?
In this suspenseful story you are drawn to the conclusion that because of their environment two identical twin br
other
s are forced to live very different lives.
Isiah, the twin that is raised in the mean streets of Chicago and lives with his biological single Mother, sees life as a struggle, and feels the burden of having to fight to survive on a daily basis. While, his twin Gabriel who has the luxury of living in a Atlanta suburb with his rich biological Father, Mother and Sister, views life as something to smile at and just float along on a cloud, that is until his twin
brother
(Isiah)comes blowing through Atlanta, hell bent on destroying everything and one that gets in his path!
Both twins, are cheated because of the mistakes and selfishness of their biological parents, who both seem afraid to tell the truth until it is much too late!
The fear, selfishness and misgivings of their parents kept these two identical twin brothers apart all of their lives, and when they meet they spend all of their time trying to demisch each others talents to destroy each other instead of making up for lost time.
The father,(TL Reid), who is perceived as a very powerful and successful businessman; actually is lacking very much in character because he did not have the courage to tell the truth in the beginning to his wife when he showed up with only one child, as a baby (Gabriel)or later when Isiah, came to Atlanta to confront him about his heritage.
When TL Reid, does tell the whole true story it is much too late for any type of reunion for the two brothers.
The author does an excellent job by adding a little sci-fi to take the story to another level, which adds more spice to the storyline.
If you want to read a great story with a just a dash of extra excitement added to the mix, then this is the book to read!

Look No Further than the Other Brother!
Even though I've read Massey's anthologies before, I was still somewhat skeptical to purchase his books. The reason should be obvious. Good short story writing doesn't always translate well to longer narratives. Luckily for me, though, my skepticism was no match for my curiosity. I bought The
Other
Brother
and it was the best purchase I made last year!
To say the Other Brother is just another story about an evil twin would be to do it a disservice! It is so much more than that! Its about family, vengeance, forgiveness and redemption. I know...I know...all evil twin stories are pretty much about the same thing. But what sets this one apart from the rest is the skill of the author! Brandon Massey effortlessly weaves an irresistible tale that satisfies on every level. Writing in the horror/suspense/thriller genre -- he is pretty much above reproach here! Small wonder he won an award for this book.
Some parts of the book are predictable. But it doesn't matter. The writing is so good -- you don't care! Massey certainly knows how to manipulate the imagination of the reader. I don't want to give anything away. But I will say this. Massey's power is in his subtlety! He doesn't beat you over the head with gore or anything. His work is more suggestive than explicit. But enough with this review, GO BUY THE BOOK ALREADY! Its fun, afforable and Amazon.com can have it at your home in no time. GET IT NOW! I can't imagine anyone not liking this book.

A Mind Blower
"The
Other
Brother
" is a good book for those who enjoy horror with a twist. Brandon Massey introduces to the reader excitement, intrigue, murder, the occult, mystery and sharper goose bumps. Often I thought I had the answer to the mystery and then realized that I didn't have the answer and had to slow my reading (and my heart) down a bit.
This is an excellent book to read during long distance traveling or just enjoying an evening at home.
"The Other Brother" is not the brother I would want in my family and neither would you. It is best that he stays in between the lines of your imagination.
I highly recommend this book.
