"We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."

Marine Corporal Jason L. Dunham was one of those rough men. And all Americans owe their freedom to men like Cpl. Dunham, who loved his family, his friends, and his country.

Jason Dunham had the gift of valor, and Michael Phillips has the gift of storytelling.

People who knew Jason Dunham for years loved, admired, and respected him. People who knew him for only a short time loved, admired, and respected him. People who casually came into contact with him noted his politeness, friendliness, willingness to help strangers, and his million-dollar smile that could light up a room. It has been said that he would give you the shirt off his back and the last dollar in his pocket, and, even then, he would still have his smile to share.

What is amazing, however, is the effect that Jason Dunham had on others after he was mortally wounded and while he was under the care of the US military's medical personnel in Iraq, Germany, and the United States. Even though he was unconscious for the entire time, Jason had a profound and lasting impact on the lives of many of those who had contact with him during the eight days that he struggled to survive after he was wounded.

And what I find most amazing of all is the effect that this outstanding Marine and his very, very moving story have had on me. Even though I never had the pleasure or the honor of meeting him, Jason Dunham is one person whom I will never forget. He was, undoubtedly and in many ways, a most remarkable young man.

I have read literally hundreds of books in my life. This is one that I will never forget.

Read this book. And, if you can get all the way through it without crying, you are a stronger person than I.

One of the best books I've ever read!

Michael Philips is a gifted writer who crafts and amazing story of a wonderful young man who gave his life to save his fellow Marines. Buy it, read it, and pass it on to someone else to read. Five stars are not enough for this book.

Powerful Story

The Gift of Valor by Michael Phillips is differant than a lot of the combat books about Iraq. One of the qualities of this publication is the author's chronicle of the entire war experience for this fallen Marine (CPL. Dunham) and his family. He tells the story of his sacrifice in Iraq (Syrian border) to the many military hospitals until he is brought back to the Bethesda Naval Hospital.

I especially enjoyed learning more about the field hospitals in Iraq, and thought Phillips painted a vivid picture of the dedication of our military medical staffs. I myself have had very positive experiences with military doctors, nurses, and staff, with very few exceptions.

Of course the main story is the heroics of CPL. Dunham as well as his Marines in Iraq. Dunham was of course nominated for the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor for using his helmet to diminish the blast of a grenade to protect his fellow Marines. He is definitely deserving of the highest medal.

One of the saddest parts of the book is the survivors guilt felt by his fellow Marines who survived. I think that part of the account really pierced my heart and was a reminder of the tragedy of war. I will conclude by thanking the wonderful and brave U.S. Marines who protect and inspire a nation every day. I believe this book is a must read for anybody who is interested in reading about a Marine who totally embodies the motto "Simper Fidelis."

Forget the movie heroes-read about a REAL hero

While I have not read the whole book, the parts I have read so far are both heartbreaking and inspiring. Heartbreaking, because a vital and brave young man could be gone is truly sad:( and inspiring because you see how hard everyone tries to save his life. His strength can be seen in the expectant ward when it is obvious that he is fighting to survive and you can see the kindness in the medical staff when they talk to him and try to soothe him. Overall a well written book about a REAL hero and why he got his MOH is seen in the book. You get to see why the Marines have a wonderful reputation. Highly recommended overall.
