A beautiful book

I just finished reading Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust, and I am deeply moved by Immaculee Ilibagiza's narrative of her personal account as a victim of the racial injustice she experienced. As a Tutsi living in civil-war torn Rwanda, she knew first-hand the evil that man is capable of doing. Thanks to Immaculee's pure heart, however, we are able to see the opposite end of the spectrum; we learn of the incredible love that a person is capable of possessing, even in the face of pure evil. I loved this book for that valuable lesson. Forgiveness--it's a difficult thing for the average human being. Immaculee, through putting her faith in God and trusting him every step of the way, found love, strength, and compassion as she was able to forgive the people who murdered her family. It is such a profound lesson in my life. How many people have trespassed on me, but I still have yet to forgive them?
Immaculee's writing style, with the help of Steve Erwin, is beautiful and poetic. I love it because she simply tells the story. The story, like scripture, leads the reader to grow closer to God and to repent of the selfishness that plague us all. I love it, because she does not push to persuade or convince, she tells what happened, and allows the reader to make his own judgment. Immaculee is an amazing inspiration to everyone. She ends the story, by explaining why she wrote the book. "I hope my story helps," she writes as she ends one of the best books this reader has ever read. I highly recommend it.

Healing Hearts and Nations

What better way to teach the power of forgiveness and healing than through one's personal account? The autobiography contained within "Left to Tell" is inspiring and almost too incredible to believe. A college student at the time of the Rwandan holocaust, Immaculée Ilibagiza lived through the horrific events that took place during that time and has chosen to share her first-hand experience with all willing to learn. I found this book to be astonishing; it opened my eyes to a historical event I had barely heard of and hope to never hear happen again. Before reading "Left to Tell," I knew very little about the terrible events of Rwanda's recent past but that all changed 215 pages later. Immaculée's account is riveting due to her explicit retelling of what she miraculously lived through. She talks openly about the shocking and barbaric ways that human beings can be led to act if hatred takes complete control of their hearts. While telling of the evils that occurred in Rwanda, she takes the reader on a journey through the development of her unshakable faith. By turning her heart and life over to God during the holocaust, Immaculée found love, peace, and the ability to forgive those who hunted her and other Rwandan Tutsis. "Left to Tell" is a wonderful account that I found difficult to put down. The events that Immaculée went through and recounts are horrific and for that reason I would save this book for older audiences.

Worthwhile and Compelling Story

To put it simply, Left to Tell is just an awesome book to read. I guarantee it will touch your heart. Author Imaculee Ilibagiza tells her story that brings you to know what the Rwandan genocide in 1994 really was. She successfully introduces the characters of her life, her family, her friends and loved ones, and instills a love of them in you. Her writing is so real. Through the happy moments, the moments of realization and hope, and through the heart-wrenching pain and coping, you will follow this woman of great faith and her struggles page after page.
What makes this book interesting? At least for me, I did not have much prior knowledge to the Rwandan genocide. I definitely didn't know it happened less than 20 years ago! The creditable information presented along with personal experiences of the characters egg the reader on.
This compelling story is not to be taken lightly. Be forewarned that it's definitely a tear-jerker. I happily recommend it to all those of a level of maturity that will use it for good. The experiences of this woman are too precious to be taken lightly. Have a good heart. Pick up this book and give it a read. You will find the same respect and love in your heart as I did.

Finding Hope

Left To Tell is a compelling and emotional narrative that is quite easy to read, as well as informative. Among the many useful techniques employed in detailing her story, Immaculee effectively uses imagery to give the reader a feel for the terror and trauma that she experienced; of course, a complete understanding of those emotions can never be transferred via words. Nevertheless, she accomplishes her purpose of raising awareness about a horrific event in our world's history that is not commonly talked about. In fact, it is a gateway to a larger issue that plagues the world- refugees and their struggles for survival. It's easy to push these issues out of our minds, but Immaculee's story forces the reader to consider the issue from the perspective of one who has suffered the atrocities first hand. Thus, Left To Tell is effective in widening one's view of the world and the things that aren't necessarily seen by our own eyes. Just because we don't see something, doesn't necessarily mean that it does not exist or never happened. Consider, for example, the wind or the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Immaculee's personal and detailed account forces the reader to stop for a moment and consider possible applications.

Left To Tell- Immaculee Ilibagiza

Immaculee Ilibagiza's book Left To Tell is a remarkable story of one girls struggle to find faith and forgiveness in the midst of a holocaust that has taken over the hearts, minds, and lives of the people in the country that she calls home.

Left To Tell is much more than a diary of Immaculee's life during the Rwandan Massacre; it is a detailed narrative of the horrible circumstance that a whole nation found themselves part of. This informative book describes the horrible massacre in a sincere and unfeigned way that the history books cannot.

Immaculee's story is something that the reader can relate to, even without ever experiencing anything like this holocaust. Through her descriptive writing style she pulls up a chair and gives her readers a front row seat to the inhumane and sadistic horrors that Rwanda suffered. She writes in a way that draws the reader in, and makes them feel as if they are actually there. My heart raced with hers, my mouth watered with hers, my mind wondered with hers.

In her book, Immaculee takes her reader through Rwanda's struggle for life, and a whole nations search for God. Fighting the Devil that has consumed the hearts of Rawanda, Immaculee shows us that God is in everything, and teaches of repentance and forgiveness. This book served as a wake-up-call to me, and through her struggle to find life and forgiveness, I myself, was brought closer to God.
