Invaluable Reference
The stitch patterns in this book are more than worth the purchase price. I scarcely have even looked at the specific projects, but have already made 5 scarves with stitch patterns from the back of the book. The charts and photos are first rate. If you are a beginner or experienced
crochet
er, this is a book for your library.
For Everyone, Comprehensive
This book has anything and everything you'd ever need to know about
crochet
--basics, types of stitches, complex work, etc. But the best part about it is that each instruction page has two columns of illustrations, one for right-handed people and (!!!) one for left-handed people. That means no more holding the book up to a mirror while you try to read! You can see from a left-handed point of view, just like the right-handed can, how to make stitches and turning chains and where to insert the hook. This book saved my crocheting life.

Great Crochet Resource! 4.5 Stars!
Donna
Kooler's
Encyclopedia
of
Crochet
is truly just that, an encyclopedia of various crochet techniques, from the very basic to the very advanced. This is not really a "teach yourself how-to crochet" book (if you're looking for one of those try Teach Yourself Crochet Visually, The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller, or Crochet Made Easy, a cd-rom made by Coats and Clark), but rather its an excellent resource for crocheters who want to refresh themselves on the basics or dive into some more advanced techniques. I am a beginner crocheter, though I am familiar with all the basic stitches, I refer to this book for both inspiration and to refresh my memory on some stitches that I may have forgotten how to do. This book also contains one of the most comprehensive histories of crochet that I have ever encountered in any book, and its crochet pattern gallery is truly inspiring with various stitches and edgings that I hope to master someday. All in all I recommend every crocheter keep this book in their crochet library, its an excellent reference and source of inspiration.

I still use this book
I've been
crochet
ing for years and I still use this book. This is the best reference book I've read. If you want to learn how to crochet, this is the book to get. The instructions in the beginning of the book (info on hooks, yarn, and the stitches) are clear and explained well. I find Illustrations in most crochet books not always the most user-friendly, but the explanation along with the illustration in this case makes for better understanding of the stitches. The pattern pictures are great, good contrasting colors make it easier to actually visualize the design. Learning to read a pattern can seem daunting at times, and I don't think the how-to of reading a pattern is any better in this book than I've seen in others. But I believe if you go through it patiently, by the time you start doing the patterns in the back half of the book, you'll understand it better over practice and exposure.
If you want to learn how to crochet or greatly improve your technique, practice doing the blocks/patterns in the back half of this book. Don't worry about doing the projects, there are better design out there (just say "No" to the philosopher jacket) forget them. Start from the first pattern, repeat it until you are comfortable with it and then go on to the next. This book will be in your library for years, well used but always a favorite.
