Warren Ellis is a mad genius

I haven't read a novel this quickly in a long time. I was a huge fan of Ellis's with Transmetropitan and some other comics/graphic novels. And his voice and style translate well to a novel format. Mike McGill and Spider Jerusalem (from Transmet) are practically seperated at birth. And Ellis has a certain love of the underside of society, and he is brutally honest about the world around us. The world is going to hell, but there is something good in there too.

The book's plot is not particularly strong, it's actually not much of a challenge for our private eye to tie up all the loose ends, and there's no reall "whodunnit" or anything like that. This is more an episodic travel adventure. You meet some wonderfully bizarre people and go through a truly twisted journey with the main characters. Along the way Ellis hits a number of truths about this country and this world and the time in which we live here. Which is what makes this book so damn good!

Kerouac on Crack (plus buttplugs)

Ellis makes a helluva splash with his first major entry into strict print literature! The story follows a beaten down, self-proclaimed S#it magnet private investigator as he unravels the threads connecting a secret Constitutition of the United States to modern day homosexual body-builders injecting liters of saline into their scrotums. He weaves brilliant scenes of godzilla bukkake and ostrich molestation. His character-development, while occasionally one dimensional, is brilliant with a diverse cast-- the beautiful tattooed omni-sexual assistant, the wretched pervert holding the reigns of the White House, etc.
His voice is powerful and competent, but at times he over-reaches and comes across as desparate. I was disappointed with the occasional recycled phrase and cliche, and sometimes it felt that he viewed this novel as a series of vignettes instead of a continuous story thread.
Despite minor flaws which keep this book to a 4.5/5 stars, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is enthralled with sex, intrigue, violence, and ostrich rape. I mean who isn't?

The Holy Grail of Modern Literature... okay, maybe not quite :-)

Being a huge fan of Ellis' Transmetropolitan series might make me a little biased, but so help me, I just couldn't put this book down! The story might be too fast paced for some readers, but I'd rather have that then authors that fatten their stories up because they get paid per word. Quality, not quantity is what you have here in Crooked Little Vein. Thank God their are authors who are not afraid of speaking their mind and showing the ugly side of life. Thrilling, shocking, thought-provoking, and all around fantastic. I'll be the first in line to buy Warren Ellis' next novel. Highly Recommended.

Shocking but Shallow

While full of shock and amusement, this book is far from being a movement. It's a quick read with a clever hero, and while it doesn't actually say much about anything, the perverseness is slightly intoxicating. However, I can't bring myself to give it more than three stars, as Ellis closed the story with a wet blanket ending and I'm half inclined to email him and ask for a portion of my money back.
