IM, A Tantalizing Message or a Prelude to Death?

Im is set in Chicago and it's nearby suburbs. It is a tale refelcting the contemporary mores of gay male life, which includes the one many gay males are quite familiar with, hunting for sex via the Internet. It immedately catches and holds your interest as Tony sits down with his computer and begins his search, seemimgly finding his ideal hot fantasy man.

The story begins there and takes you on a chilling, twisting and sometimes discomfiting ride into the heart and mind of a gay serial killer and those of his hapless victims. Im is well written and thoroughly believable, adding the element of chill. Much more than a telling of gore and mayhem, it conjures the emotions and life experiences of both, it's characters and its' readers.

The characters are readily identifiable and well defined and you may find yourself in some of them, Tony the good looking hot bartender,Milt with refined sensibilities, wishing for a warm, manly, sophisticated lover, John, facially disfigured, overweight, and desparate.Even minor denizens ensnared into this drama of sexual allure and murderous deceit are fleshed out and given their due.

a great ride of terror

I wasn't sure at first how to go about this review, I am not going to talk about the plot of the book, the characters, all that jazz, it's not my style and besides, enough people before me already have done so, so I will just talk about how it made me feel.
IM scared the crap out of me. It was chilling and what's more it is a book that not only makes you think about what you're putting out into the world when you chat online, but it really makes you think twice about it. In a world of online predators and unsolved murders it is in fact more than just a well-versed thriller, it acts as social commentary on the world we live in today. How many of us out there, especially those gays of a younger generation, or that are living in rural areas, connect with the community through online systems like gay.com, and speaking of, gay.com has become the gay one night stand quick stop, and if anything, a book like this might make ya think twice before making that connection and giving out your address, as for me, I may never use a chat server again.
Read it with the lights on and your computer off

Rick Reed's "IM" Will Keep You Up at Night

Rick Reed is a conundrum; on the outside,he is a really sweet, unassuming man, easy to talk to and be around. On the inside, he is a true master of terror as is evidenced by his new novel, IM. As many mystery books as I read, I consider myself fairly erudite in my reading of gay fiction, especially mystery and horror, but after reading Reed's new horror thriller, he delivered something to me I had not seen in a while: goose bumps!

There is something about Reed's writing that draws you in instantly;he is a master of the written word, knowing just what words and phrases to use to pull you into his world so deep that it is impossible to leave. You find yourself turning page after page as you unknowingly go around the room turning on lamps and pulling the blinds to make sure no one from the outside is looking in on you; that you really are alone as Reed takes you on a roller coaster ride of suspense and horror that leaves you breathless until you finish the last page and last word. It has been a long time since I wanted to sleep with the lights on but Reed can scare the daylights out of you, then sit back and grin as you wonder just what else he has plotting in that mind of his.

Since almost everyone has a computer and communicates with the world via cyberspace, we think of it as a wonderful thing. But after reading Reed's novel, you begin to think twice before hitting the "send" button for fear of what just might happen to you.

I have known Rick Reed since his first book was published and he has always come through on his promise to elicit thrills, chills and even terror as he spreads his words on his screen like a painter paints a fine masterpiece.

If you are bold enough to read IM, don't make the mistake I did; don't read it at night alone with only one light on. Make sure the room is well lit so you can see all the hidden crevices and see that the windows and doors are locked. Only then should you proceed to read one of the best thrillers I have read in a long while.

If there were a "six star" rating for this book, he would get it hands down!

Easy quick summer read

Took this on vacation and it read very quickly and kept me interested. A few of the discriptions were a little over used ie copper smell of the blood not sure what copper has to do with blood but it was used several times in the book. Overall well done

edge of the seat entertainment

Someone is killing and mutilating gay men, and out Chicago police detective Ed Comparetto sets out to find him. There are some plot missteps in this cat-and-mouse thriller, but Reed is a pro and his believable characters and fast paced action keep you turning the pages so fast you don't really notice them, right up to the slam-bang finish! The kind of old fashioned read that keeps you reading late at night - and listening for the creak on the stairs. Good job, Rick!
