Lyric Masterpiece

This catch-all social/political/sardonic/war/murder mystery/family story harkens back to what a literary novel should be - a novel of ideas, a fluid space where all life is meshed together. This novel reeks of place and atmosphere, resurrecing two periods in american history, the late seventies, and the cold war paranoia of the fifties. I can think of few writers who have evoked the tenor and fear of that time like Collins does in The Resurrectionists!

Sold as a murder mystery, I bought this through a handsell from a local bookseller. However, perusing the first few pages, I knew this was more than suspense, the density of the writing, the lyric quality of the prose is just as arresting as the plot. There are times when the sheer brilliance of the language is overwhelming, when you have to just re-read sections. Isn't this what the literary novel is about, the last bastion of language, of ideas?
In the last few years, there have been other literary pretenders, so called "All American Life Captured Here Books" but I don't think any are quite like this one.

Confronting the past

In THE RESURRECTIONISTS Frank Cassidy returns to his childhood town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula with his family after he learns of the untimely death of his estranged uncle. At first his intentions rested in claiming a segment of his inheritance, but soon enough he realizes that he has returned because he cannot run from the events of his past any longer. After creating a new life in the U.P., Frank slowly delves into the mysteries surrounding the death of his parents in a house fire and the subsequent psychological testing he endured afterwards. He uncovers answers that astound him and make him question his own innocence.

Set during the late 1970's, THE RESURRECTIONISTS is filled to the rim with pop culture and political references throughout the book, almost to the point of being distracting.

This is a clever murder mystery that successfully transforms the reader to the harsh and snow-filled winter of the Upper Peninsula, and the anatomy of a small Midwestern town and all its secrets.

Pacific Northwest Award Winner Is on the Money

Lost in the shuffle of blockbusters, comes this gem of genius. thank god for prizes. We choose this book (18 in our group)strictly since it was an award winner. We knew nothing of the author's pedigree, until we read the list of honors he's won. still the books are nowhere to be found. The store we ordered from had 4 copies, even though they had a display for the book given it had won the Pacific Northwest Award.
Does anybody care about great books anymore? I also found only 6 copies of this year's Pulitzer prize winner in the store...
Anyway, that's another issue. Read this for the story, for the language, for the social critique, read it for the laughs and the tears... Without going into plot summary, let's just say that this book is our pick of the year. We are now reading Collins' The Keepers of Truth and will keep you posted.

amazingly thoughtful

I was spellbound and pleased with every page of this book.
Take my advice and read it!

American Existentialism - Sheer Genius

In an epic family tale of redemption, Collins takes us to the heart of family despair, to that Michael Moore terrain of lower class America, and weaves together a plot and protagonist of such emotional complexity and sympathy, that surely the name Frank Cassidy should surface as a late twentieth century hero of American life.
Like all great books this work goes beyond plot, it encompasses an era, an ethos, a people. The hunting scene of birds being caught amidst a deep freeze is simply the best nature writing I've ever read, this coupled in the same chapter with such an exquiste Hemingwayesque treatment of getting drunk.
This book is steeped in language and blood, a book that reaches for the heavens and for the grave.
The unearthed truth at the end is a revelation that will stun you!
