One of the most ineresting books I've read in along time

This is an absolutely fascinating book on a subject that affects all of our lives, whether we realize it or not--Wal-Mart.

The business tactics, motives, effects on the economy as a whole are on full display here and I was amazed and stunned. The Federal Gov. inability to use Wal-Mart's figures in the national inflation indexes was/is mind boggling and speaks volume of why people view government figures with a jaundiced eye.

Regardless if you are a fan or critic of Walmart, this book is well worth reading.

Dog bighting its tail

This book is amazing but makes us realize that we cannot turn back to the good old days seen in movies and described by our parents where there was quality, pride and true effort in the products each nation would produce.

The more Wal-Mart stores open, the more businesses have to compete with Wall-Mart in every way or just close down. The more this happens, the lower the wages become for the employees. The lower the wages become, the more these same people are obliged to shop at Wall-Mart or similar super stores.

As you can see, Wal-Mart, may seem convenient at the beginning but the future will not be brilliant. If each nations have the same advantage or disadvantage then the only thing that will count is, Quality, Service, Efficient & innovations. The final consumer will decide on these very high values and not only on the price which will then become a honest factor.

To reach these values again, each nation must act, to make sure that merchandise that we import have people working with the same rights as any other nation or, to boycott from buying from these countries.

This would increase the values again and also the wages. People would buy less junk and also less products (because the price would increase), but with the difference that also the quality & duration would increase.

I don't need 30 sweaters but give me 5 good quality ones. I don't need 10 TV's but give me 1 Great one!

The Wal-Mart Looking Glass

If Wal-Mart represents low prices, what do low prices represent? A deeper question is this: Is Wal-Mart a reflection of society or is society a reflection of Wal-Mart?

Fishman offers a fascinating profile of how the world's largest corporation has changed the world for better and for worse.

I particularly enjoyed the saga of the Makin Bacon product, learning of Wal-Mart's role in bringing salmon to our daily diet and the profile of the manufacturer who said "no" to Wal-Mart.

Walmart - THE consumer index?

This is a great eye opener for anyone who is interested in understanding how WalMart is able to offer everything for less. There is the world's economy and then there is the WalMart economy -- one where every dollar is squeezed out of the channel and passed on to the consumer. We may rejoice at the lower prices that allow us to seemingly stretch our wallets but that really pales in comparison to the impact this company is having on our communities.

Read this to understand how to optimize the channel. Read this if you are a grocer and want to see what's coming. Read this if you want to know what it takes to get onto a shelf in WalMart. But, most importantly, read this if you want to understand why our economy's leading consumer indicator is WalMart...

Behind-the-scenes at secretive, powerful Wal-Mart

Most people are generally in favor of both a just society and low prices. So what are they to think about Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.? Is it the world's most rapacious retailer or a great place for a bargain? Does it rule its suppliers, forcing them to run overseas sweatshops to compete or does it spur more economical products? Does it pay rock bottom wages and relentlessly pursue profits, sales, market dominance and cheap goods, or does it provide rare relief for the consumer? The accusations sound daunting, unless you are a budget-weary customer. For many shoppers, these are uncomfortable contrasts. And whatever you think of Wal-Mart, you can't ignore it. With huge stores across the U.S. and worldwide, Wal-Mart, according to Charles Fishman, is not just "the world's most powerful company," it is an "economic ecosystem." Railing against it is like shaking your fist at a tsunami. Wal-Mart is nearly impervious to external impact, but Fishman has made it far more knowable. Given the debates it provokes, the impact of its policies and the price wars it wages, getAbstract welcomes this look behind Wal-Mart's shelves.
