Suspense at its finest
Detective Mia Mitchell is still reeling from the devastating shooting that left her partner hospitalized. She's just beginning to heal emotionally and is not ready for a heavy case after all she's been through.
Someone is raping and murdering women, and then setting them and their house on fire. The Chicago Fire Department has never dealt with a serial arsonist who also murders, rapes, douses his victims in gasoline, and then sets their home on fire with them still in it. This person must be stopped.
Lieu
tenant Reed
Solliday works for the Chicago Fire Department. He is widowed and trying his best to raise his teenage daughter Beth. With help from his sister Lauren, Reed is doing the best he can to juggle his work and take care of his daughter. The last thing Reed is looking for right now is a relationship. He's still mourning over his wife's sudden death and isn't ready to dive into anything emotional.
Reed and Mia are teamed up to investigate the house fire/murders. Mia is not happy about having a new partner and does her best to let this be known. Despite her reluctance to be paired up with Reed, Mia ends up liking him after all. Slowly, sparks start to fly between the two and they become extremely infatuated with each other. They will need more then a fire extinguisher to put out the fire burning between them!
Just as Reed and Mia are getting close to discovering who is behind the fires and murders, the suspects end up dead and disappearing. The murders are becoming more and more vicious. This killer is sadistic and has nothing to lose. How many people does he have to hurt before someone can catch him?
COUNT
TO TEN is suspense at its finest. Only a master can write a gritty murder scene with blood and gore, and in the next chapter have a love scene! The murders were so horrifying that I was actually gasping in shock. If you want to read a thrilling mystery, COUNT TO TEN is the way to go.
Armchair Interviews says: Excellent book.

Rose has penned another great romantic suspense
Detective Mia Mitchell has just returned from sick leave after taking a bullet in the shoulder, while her partner Abe is still recuperating from his injuries. With Abe out of the picture, she is partnered with Fire Marshall Reed Solliday, a sexy widower who is investigating a deadly fire which appears to be murder. Mia is not happy with the assignment and wants to search for Abe's assailant. A workaholic by nature, Mia is not sure what to think of her new partner, and there is a definite spark igniting between them. Between the death of her not-so-beloved father and a mysterious woman popping up all over the place, Mia's plate is too full to act on her feelings.
As Reed and Mia sift through the clues, additional fires and victims start piling up, as a madman is seeking vengeance on people who failed him and his brother, and they can't seem to connect the dots, but sure seem to connect with each other. As they get closer to the truth, Mia gets into the crosshairs of the killer, who plans to use her to detract at
tention before
he completes his revenge.
Rose's latest novel (one of many to feature Mia) is an intense, nail biting drama. Though the romance is secondary in this story, it is still prevalent and sensual. Despite its length - 550 pages, it goes extremely fast, as the reader won't be able to put it down. Between her ability to plot, realistic dialogue for characters of all ages and backgrounds, interesting and well-developed secondary characters, and not being afraid to have her characters do flawed things, no one can top Karen Rose when it comes to romantic suspense.

Stupendous!
Thoroughly enjoyed it from the begining to the end. Karen Rose is a master weaver/developer of characters into her plots. She mixes children and dogs into evertday life very well. Her plot writing is at its best. Also,I have read her other thrillers and enjoyed them as well. Hate to see the book come to an end. Sometimes I reread them after they settle down and enjoy them even better.

A Sizzling Read!
I picked up Karen Rose's '
Count
to
Ten
' after noticing that someone who had bought my novel Divine Intervention also bought Count to Ten. :) Karen Rose is a new author for me and I thought I should check her out since she's also writing about a deadly arsonist. I was hoping it would keep me up all night, maybe give me nightmares. And I wasn't disappointed.
Since recent posts here go into plot and I don't want to rehash it, I'll say that Rose's characters ring true. They are multi-dimensional in humor and spirit. The relationships between the characters will sometimes frustrate, but will definitely make you remember them.
I have to give this 5/5 stars. Count to Ten is a fast read, a great read for the car or a trip...and a great escape. The scenes are vivid and gruesome; the romance sizzles! And the main protagonist Mia Mitchell is admirable. Very reminiscent of Kay Hooper's series!
Now I'll have to go back and read the preceding novels. Thanks, Karen! :)
