Insightful story about U.S. history

I'm reading all the books in the Scholastic Dear America series to my 3rd grade granddaughter. This book brought tears to our eyes. It is well written; insightful and gives a rare look at both Native Americans' experiences during this time in our history as well as those of settlers. Mary Pope Osborne is a great writer. Would recommend her work to history buffs and those who just enjoy fiction based on fact.

A Rediscovered Favorite

When I was shopping at an auction, I found a box of books, and I can almost never pass one up. Without being able to go through it, I figured I'd just hope for the best. Once I got the box home and I began going through it, I felt pretty satisfied with what I had gotten. However, this book went into the pile of books that I planned on selling later. Eventually, I got to going through the pile to check and see if I wanted to keep anything. Remembering the Dear America books fondly from when I was younger, I began reading. Eventually, I recognized the story.

This book is one of the few that really stands the test of time. Many of my one time favorites eventually grew stale, or in the process of growing up, I left behind whatever had made me like them. However, this touching story was just as good ten years later than when I first read it, and I plan on lending it to my little sister, who is in the right age group to really love it and to learn from it in the process.

My class read this book.It was really good. My favorite part is when snowhunter played music for katie.

Just open your heart.

This story is one of my favorites I have read it twice and watched the show on it. It is a beautiful story on showing people how to open there hearts just a little...

---

The story begins with a young girl and her large Quacker family...they are very Christian and very strick...they attend school and in order to get there they must walk.

All Cat really wants to do is impress Jess Owen or even be able to say 'hello how are you.'

One day they hear that Indians have attacked and taken some children...Cat's parents keep them home from school until there have been no other Indian attacks.

Until one day when walking to school, Cat and her little brother, Thomas, are taken.

She soon forgets the date and she hates her new family...she doesn't even get to see her brother, nor know his where about or even if he is alive.

Since they do not understand her she often tells them how stupid and terrible they are and soon she meet a young man that takes her hunting and one day he speckes to her...making her feel terrible for the things she has said.

He tells her about her brother and how he is doing...soon she begins to fall for the young hunter...and her heart begins to grow with her family and being reunited with her brother...they find out that they have been takin in for the replacement of the indians children who had died.

One day the white man attacks and the indians go into hiddin in the mountain...this is the one chance to be saved and Cat does not take it she wants to continue her life with the brave indians...but sometimes things work against you for a reason.

---

This book shows how important thing are in other cultures and how if we open our hearts maybe we can get along.
